1987 Volvo 740 from Germany - Comments

"A reliable car... one can get used to the "boxy" design :-)"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing special! Water pump, brake shoes replaced at 210.000 km, clutch at 280.000 km, timing belt at 260.000 km... Front seats are worn out (the car is almost 20 years old now) and the seat heaters are out of order :-)

General comments?

The car has the original engine and is still running very good. It runs with an LPG system... which is very attractive due to the relatively low price of the fuel. The car is just RELIABLE.

The car is ROOMY and really designed for a HEAVY-DUTY use.

Would love to have the seat heater repaired again... I would keep the car until it falls apart.

I had a Volvo 740, 1987 from when I was 16 to 22. This thing was indestruible! It was easy to work on and kept taking abuse.

The only real issue I ever had with it was electrical problems. I got pretty good and jerry rigging them!

An update:

The muffler and the tail lights (typical probl. for the 700-900s')were also replaced at 280.000 km.

Yet another update:

301.000 km: had to replace the ECU. The catalytic converter has to be replaced too.
