1990 Volvo 760 2.3L turbo Intercooled from North America

Summary:

I love this car, and would gladly and quickly buy another like it

Faults:

I replaced all front suspension parts.

I replaced all brake rotors, and pads.

I replaced the exhaust from the cat back.

I had to rebuild the entire electrical system inside the car because of a crook tearing out the dash to get the stereo and DVD player.

General Comments:

I bought the car for $350 as a theft recovery, the interior had been gutted, but the exterior was pristine.

The car is very quick and with the above mentioned parts is very reliable, and handles very well for a 3500lb car.

I recently drove the car from Seattle, WA to Morgantown, WV (a distance of 2750 miles) without incident or worry.

I love the rear wheel drive, and am surprised at the power and responsiveness of the turbocharged 4 cylinder.

1990 Volvo 760 Turbo Wagon 2.3L Intercooled turbo from North America

Summary:

Rolling Steel

Faults:

It has all the normal problems that seem to come with an older car.

The worst problem was when the ignition cylinder locked up, I replaced the entire steering column.

General Comments:

This car is a grocery getter that has more power than people assume.

It has only left me stranded once, see above.

This is a pretty utilitarian vehicle.

If you can get a decent one for a low price you will not regret it.

1990 Volvo 760 turbo Intercooler from North America

Summary:

Awesome

Faults:

Blew radiator hose on the way back from Atlanta.

Had a problem with the exhaust, car would stall on freeway... wait 30 seconds and car would start up again and run for a good while.

A/C didn't work.

General Comments:

I bought this car for $2400 I do believe.

The car was a dream: comfort, power, storage, handling, accessories... swedish limousine.

I purchased the car from a retired man, and about 3 weeks after I noticed the car had a bad problem. The engine light would come on and the engine would lose about 80% of its power as if it was going to stall.

I did not have any money to put into this car at the time.

The problem eventually turned into full stalls at random times, like on the freeway to work, coming back from a vacation. it would start right back up after about 30 seconds though.

Then, sadly one day, I was picking a friend up from the airport in Atlanta, and on the way back we were chatting up a storm and I notice my thermometer is maxed out! I pulled over and smoke came flying out of the hood, the car crept to a halt, and that was the end.

I miss the car a lot!

Its all true. I have driven many cars and this is one of the best cars I have ever driven that is the Volvo 760GLE.

1990 Volvo 760 GLE 2.8 V6 from North America

Summary:

This vehicle represents Volvo's finest achievement in its name

Faults:

I purchased this 760 GLE work of engineering excellence right during the time in its life when it needed someone caring like me the most.

The power antenna and stereo cassette had died.

The small console lights were just about all burned out.

The front seat heaters didn't heat and both front seat recliner cables had failed.

The only interior wear was in the front seats though, and the body didn't show a speck of rust throughout.

The paint on the hood and roof had oxidized, but was fine everywhere else.

After conducting a standard tune-up on the engine it ran far beyond my expectations in quality performance, and the transmission was strong. The engine didn't leak any oil and the transmission only a residue's worth.

The only annoying thing I experienced from the engine was the tapping of valves when I would first start it up in the morning.

Gas mileage suffers heavily averaging between 15-18mpg.

General Comments:

The car performed surprisingly well for its size and weight.

When used for passing, the engine would down-shift and jump into the 5,000 rpm range without hesitation, hold for a few seconds while a high pitched whistling sound occurred (maybe from the electric blower singing under the air intake box), then slingshot you ahead with enough force to bark the rear tires and snap your head back and suck your whole body into the left side of your seat.

Top speed far exceeds 120mph. For example, it didn't shift into overdrive until the speedometer reached between 110-115 mph. When it shifted the rpm's were around 4,800. I didn't want to break the needle after it jumped to 120mph so I backed off, but you can figure (with the rpm's to spare) it could probably do around 30 mph more.

With the new overhaul in progress, this car should easily last another 10 years before retiring in my car museum.

I bought an '89 760 turbo sedan with 96k miles on it. 64k were put on its first 13 years, then only 32k put on its last 13 years before I got it.

It was driven here in California by an older gentlemen, and is virtually like new, only the cruise control switch and the A/C needing a refill didn't work.

It had a loud whine in the turbo when it wound up, but some slick 50 added to the oil cut that out after it worked its way into bearing after two weeks.

After I get some performance parts from ipd, this will be my dream car and the last one I purchase for many years.
