"Lightening fast, great drive, poor build quality"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

My drivers door windows fell out.

The air conditioning unit failed causing the interior of the car to flood.

The CD Player stopped working.

The gearbox failed and had to be replaced.

The automatic windscreen wipers failed.

General comments?

I have owned my Peugeot 306 for almost 6 months now and absolutely love it.

Although a diesel, it is still seriously quick and would leave most cars you see on the road in its tire-tracks. Peugeot have done a fantastic job with the 2 litre HDI Turbo charged engine, it always has more grunt to offer.

The car can achieve a fairly high mpg if driven modestly, but there is a noticable drop in mpg if you like to exercise your right foot a lot.

As the car is essentially a GTi replica (minus the engine), it has all the same specifications and bodywork that the GTi enjoys.

The car is a joy to drive and in my opinion is one of the best handling cars on the road. In terms of enjoyment and being a 'drivers car', it would score 10 / 10.

However, I have been besieged with problems from the very day I bought the car - and am sorry to say that this was the case with my last 306 as well. It seems that many 306 owners are admitting to poor build quality and reliability.

My problems have ranged from a window falling out to a complete gearbox failure. Thankfully for me, the warranty is still running on my car, so it has not cost me anything.

Overall, a fantastic car to drive that will turn heads where-ever you. However, be prepared to put up with the poor build quality and the problems that it will bring.

Although my 306 is staying mine for the near future, my next car will not be another 306!

Hi Steve

I have a 306Hdi Meridian new in April 2001. Really love the car, but since July 2002 it has been an intermittent non-starter. I notice it particularly when I have been running it for a few miles/hours then I turn off the engine. I notice that it takes ages to restart - labouring terribly both the starter motor and the battery. On several occasions it hasn't started at all for a few days. It has been in the garage several times. To date: new diesel pumps (high and low pressure), clean out of fuel system and filter. New glow-plugs. A nightmare. I only have 10 months left now so have written to MD of Peugeot UK asking for an extended warranty on this recurring, ongoing problem.

Yeah mate had similar.

Owned the car 18 months, the ECU light lights up regular. Check the codes £25 a shot all the faults are rubbish. The car drives fine with the light on, but each time it logs a fault you don't know until 20 logged and then it won't start until the codes are cleared.

Replaced the battery leads, cleaned all sensor connections no use. I tends to happen on damp or wet days. The local dealers are as much use as a flat tyre.

Solution, browsing the web to buy a link kit for the laptop and then I will be able to clear my own codes.

PS the remote control for the central locking on pugs always resigns after 3-4 years, mine just has this also happened on the 6 406's my old company owned. It's not the keys, but the cars. Anyone a solution to that one?

A current Pugs own of a fast nippy pugs that knows how to empty a wallet. Always keep a tow rope and cell phone in your Pug, you will need them.

AK.

I wouldn't say it was an immobilser problem, as you state the car is turning over etc.

Could it not be something like the glow plugs?

(apologies if you have already checked them)

I've owned my Pug 306 1.6 Meridian for 18 months now, and have really enjoyed the car itself.

I've had a few problems with the car though.

Air bag light goes on and off on its own. Sometimes it will be on for a few days.

My engine management light comes on once every 2/3 months, drives as good as gold though.

Also got my air conditioning topped up last year. Sometimes it works really well, and sometimes it hardly works at all. I've had it checked and it's still topped up OK.

All things aside, I find the car a really comfortable ride, and overall I'm pleased with it.

I own a Pug 306 Meridian 1.6 petrol 2001. Have been having problems with the air con. Sometimes it will work fine, then some other times it will hardly work at all. Had the gas topped up last year, but still didn't work as good as it should.

Find the ride and the comfort of the car quite good.

Have done 80000 miles in it last year, and the gearbox decided to give up 5th gear. Luckily enough I had it done on warranty with the garage I bought it from.

Has anyone else had these sort of problems with the air con. If you have and found a cure for it, could you please email me at

I've had sometimes problems with starting 306 2.0 HDI. I've replaced fuel pump and it didn't help. The problem was in in-tank fuel pump power relay which is located under ECU, near battery. Maybe this would help.

Just purchased my first 306...stunning car! always been a fan. Got the HDI D-turbo version. looks great and actually shifts!. was quite suprised.:)

However I've been looking around and toying with the idea of an induction kit. Has anyone had one fitted to give me a decent review. what kind of bhp increase am I looking at? more to the point, I want to keep it as quiet as possible, not keen on having a 306 with a roaring exhaust! a little too old for that.lol. any help greatly apprecieated.

I have only one problem with my 306 hdi, the rain sensing wipers have decided to take a rest on their way back down pausing about half way. Has anyone else had this problem? by the rest of the comments sounds like I've got off lightly.

I have a 2000 1.9D 306 and absolutely love him to bits. Had an air valve shut off recently and fuel system flushed, the car must be doing at least 85BHP now, not bad at all for a non-turbo.

However, I want to move onto an HDI.

Stupid question here- is there actually a difference between HDI and HDI Turbo? The reason I ask is because they both have the same 90BHP. If so, which is nicer and FASTER to drive?

Hello,

I have a W reg 306 HDI, and I have owned it for about 4 years, 120k miles.

It's very economical and has good acceleration. All in all, it's a nice motor with good aesthetics. Add to this the common rail direct injection power unit, which averages 60 mpg on a run.

Problems so far, include crankshaft damper, odometer not reading, and recently a breakdown.

An ECU fault finder costing £20, indicated

the pump primary circuit not operating.

There's 2 pumps in the fuel system, submerged tank pump and the high pressure pump (mechanically driven). To get at the tank pump - lift the rear seat and remove the circular cover, the pipes and electrical connector have spring clips.

Unscrew the locking ring and the unit lifts out.

I checked the pump by putting a battery across the terminals; it was dead. A new pump unit cost £124 from a Peugeot dealer.

It's up and running again.

Hi All.

I have a year 2000 (W reg) Peugeot 306 XSi which has only done 28K miles.

This weekend, when I tried to unlock the car by using one of the two buttons on the key fob, nothing happened.

When I opened the drivers door by using the key in the lock, only the drivers door opened. Usually when you do this, the central locking opens all of the doors.

When I tried to start the car by turning the key in the ignition full way, the engine cranked (strongly) but it did not start.

I know the car battery is good and I have just changed the battery in the key fob.

What is my problem, can I fix it or does it have to go to a dealership?

Thanks in advance.
