The truck has started stalling at different speeds without any warning. Dealer has replaced fuel pump, fuel filter and tank level sending device. Vehicle still stalls. Co-pilot attached to vehicle is not giving any codes for problems that I am experiencing.
If anyone has experienced the stalling problem I would be interested to see a post regarding a possible fix.
The Durango has been a low maintenance vehicle for me.
In 158,000 miles I have replaced:
3 sets of front brake pads
1 set of front rotors
3 sets of tires
the fuel pump, fuel filter and Level device.
This vehicle is still tight even though it is riding on the original shocks and ball joints.
This vehicle has been the most trouble free vehicle that I have owned.
You should check all fuel lines and if not the fuel system replace your computer chip with a used one, usually costing $150-$200 at a used car part store, but there are a thousand reason why a durango could stall, injectors, coil packs, fuel lines, computer chip, plugs, plug wires, firing order, and just about everything under the sun.
We have a 1998 Durango with 130,000 miles on it (we bought it new). I still love my Durango and ours did the same thing, but it was easy to diagnose with ours. It was the oil filter. It plugged on us so make sure that isn't your problem & make sure it is tight.
Hello my name is Joe I’ve been experiencing a stalling problem for the last 2-3 months on my 1999 Dodge Durango SLT 4x4 5.9. I’ve replaced Coil Pack, 02 Sensors, Evaporator purge solenoid and vehicle speed sensor prior to smog test, my check engine light still comes on and still reads the old last known error in the (ECM Computer) it will stall of course engine compartment is pretty hot due to my location up in the High Desert wait 5, 10, sometimes 20 minutes it will crank back up. All gages work in the instrument panel except gas gauge reads empty, I would know if its ready to crank up when the fuel tank gauge registers to the level I’ve taken it to the Dealer of course they ran their diagnostic each time they came out with something different. It’s getting pretty expensive bringing it to the dealer, the last diagnostic was the ECM Computer that they came up with, please share your problem. thanks Joe D.
Hi.
I have a 1999 Dodge Durango 4x4 SLT 5.9L. At about 100k miles we replaced the transmission and everything had been OK since. At about 130k miles had spark plugs, cables and distributor rotor replaced and then just about suddenly the vehicle started stalling. We wait for a 5-15 minutes and it will start, but there is no particular pattern as to when it will stall again. Further, I noticed that every once in a while it will show "No bus" in the odometer.
The dealership believes it is not the computer because when it quits (according to them) it quits there is not stalling etc. I know a few people have experienced this problem, but I really did not find any solution.
I am having stalling problems with my 99 Durango. The dealer cannot duplicate the problem so they can't fix it. They have replaced several parts, done a tune up, etc, at a cost of over $1200.00 to date, and still can't find the problem. Also, the a/c & heat stopped working around the same time. It stalled for the very first time this summer, just as I was approaching an intersection, with with my kids in the back. We almost got plowed over by a semi at a traffic light on a 55 mph road. I lost power steering and BRAKES, and thankfully ran into a ditch because the road curved. I was actually aiming for a tree so as not to cross the intersection. My husband bought this as a baby shower gift for me and now I don't allow my kids to be driven in it. It still looks good sitting in the driveway, but come on, the north country winter is coming and I need my 4wd. Please report your problem to the NHTSA and DODGE and get a case number, many lives are at stake! IF you know the answer to really fixing the problem, please post it. We're desperate and cannot afford to buy a new car. We still owe $9800 on this one. Thanks and God Bless.
I had a 1999 Dodge Durango SLT that would stall for no reason too. It's seemed to be only when the vehicle was warm or after it had been running a while. No warning. Just died. I also was in the middle of an intersection once when it died. Luckily, I was able to push the vehicle back and from that point learned to gun it just in case I needed to coast through another situation like that. Anyway, The gas gauge wouldn't read and NO BUS in the odometer area. I could wait 5-10 minutes and it would start again. This seems to be a common problem and I would think the dealerships would be aware of this. They should be. With the 1999 Durango we had we replaced the ECM brain box and it seemed to fix the problem (We sold it very shortly after that) but the guy that bought it says that now the ABS light is always on. We just purchased another Durango. A 2001 this time. It wasn't running when we purchased it so it was a good deal. Now we have the same problem. We thought we knew how to fix it. We replaced the ECM this time and it still won't work. I love these trucks too. But they are getting a bad reputation. Dodge needs to address this issue.
We 1999 Dodge Durango SLT that stalls and dies for no reason and with no warning. It seems to stall after the vehicle is warm and has been running a short while. We wait for a 5-15 minutes and it will start, but there is no particular pattern as to when it will stall again other than the vehicle is warm. We’ve taken it to have the diagnostics run and each time the fault is not duplicated. I have run the diagnostics myself at a local chain parts store, and it has turned up nothing.
During one stall on a major county road, we were almost plowed into by a semi and several other vehicles. We were missed by a matter of inches. We have endured threats, verbal abuse, various hand and arm gestures, and even what we believe to have been a gun pointed at us. Our Durango has become extremely hazardous to drive.
Dodge needs to address this issue, and quickly.
Has anyone figured out the NO BUS and stalling of the Durangos? Mine is a '99 with 138,000 miles and is doing the same thing - dies without warning, NO BUS in the odometer field, starts back up after 5-10 minutes like nothing happened. No one has had any luck diagnosing the problem, the computer shows no codes. After reading some posts on other websites, I replaced the Crank Position Sensor, to no avail, it still dies. My next logical step is replacing the PCM (computer) and cross my fingers.
Random Stalling: It is the computer located on the passenger side of the engine compartment. I went through the same thing until we tracked it down. I'm electrical engineer and it took several days to fault isolate the problem to a rather poorly manufactured connector on the computer. Can't be repaired, only replaced. This is a known problem and one of the reasons that I will never buy another Dodge. It is a mfr. defect and should be replaced for free, but Dodge claims otherwise... even though thousands have failed in dangerous situations.
Random stalling comment from 19 June 06: As it is now a few days after your post and fix you described, have you experienced the problem again? Mine just started stalling today, 4 times over several hours. 99 SLT, 70,000 miles. I'm headed to trusted mechanic tomorrow and would like to take him as much real world / anecdotal info as possible. Thanks.
We purchased a 99 Dodge Durango about a month ago for my 20 year old daughter. Within a few days the car stalled and has periodically stalled for no reason several times. Of course it will not do it at the mechanics and they have just had it for 2 weeks trying to diagnose the problem. They replaced the Crank Sensor and we just picked it up and had it probably 10 min when it once again stalled, but, started right up. This is extremely frustrating as I want my daughter to be safe. To trade it in would cost her a lot of money and to sell it to someone else unethical. This seems to be a problem with this vehicle yet no one can nail down the exact problem with it. I am not wanting to spend 1000's of $$$ on maybes.
HELP!
Julie's mom.
I am having a problem with my 2005 Dodge Durango stalling for no reason. I have had it to the dealer several times this time twice in one week and they kept it over the holiday week end. need help to find out what to do.
I also own 1999 durango slt plus 4X4, same problem, No bus, stalling and no instruments working. Problem: ECM. Specific problem according to our analysis: while starting with an old battery or very cold conditions voltage drop amperage rise ruins the ECM´s memory. Fix: replace ECM by a remanufactured. Real problem: they are scarce. Aprox. Cost is US$350.00 and US$200.00 for a new battery.
I would appreciate ECM rebuilders that offer warranty to contact me at syaminab@yahoo.com.
I have a 1998 Durango, 4x4, 5.9L... Beefy fun car... WHEN IT WORKS. For the last couple of weeks I've been having a similar stalling problem. Most times it is 4 minutes into the trip (almost exactly). Sometimes it will restart right away, other times it takes hours. The ASD relay and fuse is good, getting the voltage to the coil, but NO spark to the coil or fuel injector right after it stalls. New Throttle Position Sensor, new Crankshaft Position (newer anyway), new battery, and now I just ordered a PCM from online. It's costing me $90 more bringing the total to some $330 or more plus amazing headaches and stalls in horrible places. Should be interesting. I'm an engineer and am having trouble figuring this one out... HELP???
I have had my durango stall and have the NOBUS come up in the odometer. I have taken it to a dealer and they have not been able to find the problem. In another forum, I have read about wiggling the connection to the pcm. After stalling about 30-40 times I believe I have figured out the problem. After the durango stalled, I would push up on the connection all the the way on the back of the pcm. I could hear the fuse popping back on. What I did was to put a bracket above the pcm. there is a notch where I was able to bolt a bracket. I then put a 4 inch hose clamp around the connection which pulled it up. The two days before I did this my durango had stalled about 6 to 8 times. It has now been a week and a half without stalling. It cost me less than two dollars for the hose clamp and I found the bracket and the bolt in my basement. If anyone tries this, please post it. I hope this helps anyone out there. thanks.
