I have taken my '92 Maxima to the dealership with terrible hesitation/stalling problems. They say they cannot duplicate the problem, but said that the power transistor might be out of it. I replaced that. I also replaced the ECM unit under someone else's advice. The car still hesitates and stalls. A few days ago I was entering a highway and had terrible intermittent hesitation problems - cars honking at me from behind - it was a nightmare, and very scary. Took it straight to the dealer and same old story - they can't duplicate the problem and say they have not heard of this before. Doesn't matter if it's hot or cold, uphill or downhill - it acts like it's not getting any fuel and just seems to lose power. Please help! Nissan won't do anything.
I have a 92 SE with 5-spd manual trans and had the exact same problem. Someone I worked with had a 92 auto trans with the same problem. I heard that sometimes the electrical contacts wear out so was advised to put some die-electric lubricant on all connections. Basically pull apart all electrical connections, squeeze some of the lube onto the terminals, and put it back together. That solved the problem for both of us... at least for a while. Actually, the fix lasted about a year and now I am having the same problem. I tried re-lubing every electrical connection I could finf... even some of the fuses and the problem has not gone away and has actually begun to get worse. I am at witts end...
By the way, the person that also had the problem changed jobs a while ago so I am not sure if the problem has recurred.
Maybe this will help you... at least for a while.
It is the problem of sensors in engine. that is what my mechnician (a Chinese guy with great experience in auto) told me three weeks ago when my 93se have the same problem after I buy it. I do a computer scan at a dealer and gave the report to my mechnician. he buy the sensor and replaced it. it seems that the problem is solved at present. I will have a eye on it in the future.
Usually when I have a problem with a car hesitating/stalling when accelerating I check the fuel filter.
My 92 Nissan was doing the same thing, burping and farting at times and you needed to almost floor it to get it going. Turned out to be the O2 sensor, now I get almost 150 km (approx 100miles) more per tank and car runs exceptionally smooth. Seems when the O2 sensor fails it doesn't revert to a mechanical setting it just stays with the readings from the failed sensor.
Hope this helps.

Contact grease?
Too much is too much: you short circuit all pins if too much. Adding only minuscle amount takes hesitation away. So wash your contacts and start again...
Question:
Anybody knows if O2 sensor testing tells the truth or is there anything more into it?
Test procedure:
Testing.
1.) Using a multi-meter, check for voltage by back probing the MAF sensor connector. Connect the + probe on the tester to the B terminal of the connector. This connector should have 5 wires going into the 6 slot connector. The lettering starts on the side where the first wire is (A, B, C, D, E, empty). So you want to test the second wire on the side without the empty connection. Keep this connector connected while you are running the tests. Do this by folding back the rubber boot from the back of the connector.
2.) With the ignition switch ON and the engine stopped, voltage should be less than 1.0 volt.
3.) With the engine idling at operating temperature, voltage should be 1.0-1.7 volts.
4.) With the engine running at approximately 2,500 rpm, voltage should be 1.5-2.1 volts.
It is important to watch for a linear voltage rise in response to increases in engine rpm, up to about 4000 rpm.
5.) If voltage is not within specifications, check the power and ground circuits.
6.) If the power and ground circuits test okay, the MAF sensor may be faulty.

Pete.
I also own a 92 Maxima SE and have the exact same problem. It has a DOHC with 5spd transmission and cuts back terribly bad. The dealership said at first that I needed to change the plugs and then it solved the problem temporarily. Also I took it to another dealership and they said I need to replace the motor. I didn't agree with them because the motor pulls fine. Also they said that the symptoms sounded like the MAF, but I replaced it with a new one and nothing changed. I believe that I will replace my O2 sensors and see what happens.
There have been lots of different results to solve this problem.
Bad Mass Air Flow Sensor
Bad connections (previous writer mentioned)
Faulty ECU (ECM)
Faulty Cam Position Sensor
Faulty Coil Packs -- this is the most common cause of hesitation and stalling.
Improper spark plugs
Oxygen Sensor.
Good luck.
My '92 5spd DOHC is having the same problem as everyone has described. Fuel Filter, MAF, plugs, O2, clutch, etc have all been suggested and subsequently replaced. Still cuts out and stalls every once and a while. Nissan has no explanation. Still haven't found the cure, however am probably going to sell it just b/c of that - otherwise it's been a great car! I have been told maybe it's a vacuum somewhere or else it must be electrical. It really is a pain, too bad, I'm sorry I don't have a solution to contribute.
I Have The same problem 2 years ago. It was the spark plug cables, that resolves the problem for me.
I have a 92 gxe and have not had this Prob. Yet.. I had a friend who had a 94 and had this problem the dealership said they could duplicate the problem, turned out to be the fuel injectors he replaced all of them and solved the problem.
Same car (92 Maxima) and same problem. Dealership could not get the car to reproduce the results. I changed the spark plugs and had the engine fogged--no difference.
What actually has worked, is that I now run only the lowest octane fuel--and that has stopped the problem ALMOST completely. Weird.
I have a 92 Maxima Se my mechanic just finished changing the fuel pump, injectors, spark plugs, ECCS, fuel lines, tank, filter and I still have the same issue... I hate this car.
I also have a 92 SE Automatic. It has downshifting, stalling, hesitating. I took it to Nissan Dealer and other mechanics who could not detect the problem. I then started reading up on it and just began using Fuel Additives from S.T.P. So far, I'm crossing my fingers, it has not stalled or downshifted. Weird. This is like the 2nd post above from me.
Yup I have these same problems too, have replaced or tested just about everything that's been suggested to me and it's still giving me the same BS. At this point I've put in loads of money so don't want to just dump the car, but I still have the hesitation and stalling that started out as intermittent and is now consistent! so annoying.
I have a '92 SE 5spd, and have the same problem as all the rest of you with my stalling, hesitating, misfiring VE30DE.
I've tried a few things, but no improvement yet. It's been going on for almost a year now, but hasn't really become any worse. I've been trying to find a power transistor, but the VE is a scarce find at a salvage yard, and a dealership quoted the price of a new unit at $411.
