I purchased my dream car once I got back from Iraq.
I've had problem after problem. Tires, sunroof, fuel leaks, windshield washer fluid hose line (not staying connected) I truly would not advise anyone to buy a Jaguar. I am very disappointed in my dream car.
Took it to where I purchased the car from and I was told by 4 mechanics that I had a transmission leak, and they diagnosed the problem as a leak from the power steering hose. Wrong, it was the transmission. I am in Fort Bragg with a broken Jaguar that always has a flat tire.
While reading this forum, I saw that back in July, someone posted about the engine sputtering and the "Cruise Not Available" warning coming up on their message center.
I had the same problem with my 2003 x-type.
There is a technical service bulletin out for this problem.
Something to do with the fuel rail and the engine starving for fuel.
The Jag dealer replaced the Fuel Rail and I haven't had the problem occur again. ($880.00 for the rail and $300.00 Labor).
Hope that helps.
I have an '02 X-Type 3.0L Sport with 60 000 miles. I see many of the issues I've been having are quite common from reading the forum. Besides the auto transmission issues, there have been few posts regarding solutions to these problems. If anyone can, please elaborate in the issues or solutions to the problems.
Issues I'm having:
#1. Wheel Noise - seams serious - my car appears to have a fair bit of intermittent noise coming from the passenger side rear wheel. When the noise occurs, the car seems a slight bit sluggish and the wheel & brake disc get quite hot. Burning to touch. At first I thought wheel bearing. I disassembled, inspected, repacked. No issue found. I have seen some posts regarding transfer case. Could that be the issue?
#2. Small oil leak. Few drops few times per week. Burning oil smell comes into cabin. Have not been able to locate source.
#3. Sunroof does not function properly.
#4. Driver's door electric lock functions from inside car, but not with FOB.
#5. Headlight bezel adjustment screws failed. Adjustment gear has broken from shaft.
#6. Bent rims.
#7. Evap. leak. probably fuel cap.
#8. Hood latch cable sticks.
#9. Trunk latch & sensor somewhat intermittent.
#10. Don't close the trunk when the car is locked and your key inside.
#11. Passenger seat adjustments don't all work.
#12. Telescoping tire iron breaks.
If anyone has ideas or solutions to these issues. Much appreciated.
My X Type 3.0SE A/T 2002MY 75,000km died on the highway with no engine warning light or fault code being recorded. I could just get the engine running, but it would not pick up revs. Turns out the wiring connection on the fuel pump is to blame (which requires the tank to be dropped). Dealer said during their tests a wiring fault code does appear.
I also have a vibration at 80-90kph which, and from reading other forums, it is probably caused by a driveshaft (s) being out of alignment due to a gasket failing on the CV coupling. Aparently the gasket is between alloy and steel components which isn't a happy formula when each heats up and expands differently.
Also had badly 'sand blastered' and faded headlights (sealed units either side) lined up for replacement. At US$650 each I searched for an alternative solution. Finally settled on a Diamond Clear Acryllic polishing kit at US$40. Awesome result. Had to be careful not to burn the acryllic, but with care got a great result.
I have had some of the same problems that people have mentioned on the site. Although I do have a Jaguar 2002 X-Type, the dealership did call me to tell me that there was a safety issue on transmissions and changed mine with no cost to me.
Now the problem that I am facing is my differential under my car; has anyone had this problem yet? And what is the cost to replace it?
Rumbling in rear of 2002 X-Type at speeds 60 MPH or more was due to Hanger Bearing for Prop Shaft loose, Prop Shaft replacement solved problem, unknown as to cost as was covered by Jaguar Extended Warranty at 51,000 miles.
Hi
I had a 2003 XK8 I bought it with about 30,000 miles, for just under $30,000 used, I thought it would be a steal, but boy was I wrong... While the look of the car is amazing, I've had issues with the door locks, the motor in the driver's door died, I could use the remote, but would have to climb in the passenger side, and reach over to the driver's door and manually push it into the unlock, the interior is pretty nicely done, the seats are a pain though. They're fully powered, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you can find a decent position... The auto wipers do every once in a while just go turn on without any rain or anything, but I've had other cars with auto wipers do the same thing. One problem I have had is with exterior fit and finish, the headlight washer cover just popped off... didn't break, just popped off the front of the car, one day... The fit and finish inside the trunk is pretty sub-par too, the carpeting just reminds me of my Oldsmobile Aurora, the way it doesn't fit right and just looks cheap.
Overall, I did get the car used, I planned this to avoid the depreciation, but still have to deal with it anyway, It's a decent car, haven't run into any major major snags yet. Although the steering is a little too light for my taste, because the car can wander suprisingly easily (blame the wide tires) fuel economy is bad, but it's also a heavy V8 "sports" car... So overall not too bad, would I buy another? Probably not, Jaguar of America customer service is horrible, they make you feel stupid if you have any complaint, I had a 97 XK that was a nightmare. But so far, I am at least pleased, and will definitely be buying Mercedes next time... Good luck with your cars.
Hi, I have a 2003 2.5L manual X type with 18,000 miles. It just started to make a very annoying howl/whirring sound during deceleration, usually as the vehicle is coasting down (either in gear or neutral), between 25mph and 30 mph range. Only occurs when the temps are low (below 25 deg F), and much worse in very low temps (below 10 deg F). The sound seems to be coming from the rear of the vehicle. As you are decelerating it will start to howl at about 30mph and as you decrease your speed to 25mph, it will stop (i.e., no or very little noise below 25mph.
Has anybody experienced this? I'm thinking it's the driveshaft or differential.
Responding to jan. 20 howl noise
2002 X type---I too have heard for the first time 2 weeks ago the whine of something which I don't understand. It was on a cold start, cold day near freezing and at about 20 and up 35 or so there was a whine like a turbo fan or small turbine engine bearing. Sound continued when decelerating, even in neutral, it seems to be there down to about 10 miles per hr.
It happened again yesterday, but did not last long. The temp. out side was about 37 degrees F. To me it seemed to come from the front passenger side area. It is not the blower. The whine seems to increse and decrease with the speed of car regarless of the car being in gear or in neutral! intrested to find issue.
This is the answer to the whining noise in cold weather:

I am a 2002 x-type 3.0 owner and just yesterday diagnosed this problem with my mechanic friend. haven't called Jaguar USA yet to see if they found a resolution so if anyone does it before me please post! Has anyone bought any extended warranty for this car? what is a good place to buy one? I got a quote for about $2200 for 36k/3y with decent coverage.
I have a 2002 X-Type bought in 03/2006 with 46000 miles and the extended warranty. Though I love my car dearly, I've already had the transmission replaced at about 52000 and it's in the shop again, and it looks like my transmission again. My luck was good until the 18th, so I just made it.
As for the howling sound, I too had the same issue came from my front passenger side in very cold weather at low speeds. I was told it was common; however Jaguar checked my car this time and they had to replace a valve or vent (can't remember off hand as I have not gotten my car back yet.) which had a small hole that was causing the howling.
I've had other issue interior door handles; replacement of trunk lock; moon roof not closing. I too experienced the caps on my highlight wipers falling off, but mine had been expoy on by someone prior to my purchase and I fought to have them replaced.
I am not sure why all these issues are happening, but I still love my car. Would I get another one... YES, but I more informed as all cars no matter the maker are chances... sometimes you're lucky, and sometimes you're just screwed.
I attempted to contact Jaguar regarding the failure of the automatic transmission. My VIN number falls within the more likely to fail range and I have a transmission with one of the serial numbers noted in the post of August 1, 2007.
Jaguar basically told me that this recall campaign XT307-S941 (Sept 03) does not exist. Despite reading from the document to Jaguar Customer Service the only response I got was that there is no such document.
Has anyone had similar/different responses
I think I'll take my car to a local trans shop for service as Jaguar wants over 7000 for the service.
Big disappointment.
I have had my 2002 Jaguar X-Type 2.5 Sport for 11 months (73,000 miles) and it just died yesterday. Maximum speed of 10mph, coasted to 5mph until it kicked in again and I could get it back up to 10mph. It's at the shop now... after reading all of these comments I'm pretty sure I know the diagnosis. Wish me luck on the 2003 recall. I know somebody that works for a Jaguar dealership and I'm sure he'll be willing to do some investigating for me.
2002 2.5 Jaguar X-Type.
Today I dropped off our Jaguar to the dealer to address likely transmission issues. The car has 73,000 miles and really has been a good car until now. The car has only slipped gears a couple times over the last couple days and the "Transmission Fault" message goes away upon restart. My hope is that they will effectively read the codes, diagnose the issue appropriately and replace this transmission! This car is under Select Edition status until March 30th 2008. I'll update this list with my results hopefully yet this week.
Adding to Feb 14th message... got my diagnosis this morning. I need a new transmission. The service guy told us that "the technician got aggressive with it and now the car won't shift into reverse so you need a new transmission." Got aggressive with it??? $5100 for a new transmission - I'm sick. I will talk everyone out of buying a Jaguar from now on after reading this forum.
