I only stumbled in here while looking for some info on replacing the distributor, but have to say that my gf bought her MX-6 brand new in 1993, and is still driving it. Well... sort of. The distributor just went on it, after 180k kms. I have been with her for about a year, and this is the first issue she has had with the car. She claims that she has not put very much into it besides general maintenance. After the distributor is replaced, she is selling it because she just bought a new RX-8.
I bought the great looking 93 Mazda MX6 LX (6cyl) 1 year ago and have had nothing, but problems with it. I love the car when it runs good, but I can trust it to get me to where I want to go and get back with no problems.
The engine likes to over heat and will melt all of the seals and o rings very quickly if you don't notice the temp go up right away.
I replaced the engine after it through a rod and it has not run the same since. The mechanic I used is great with cars, but the MX6 is a very touchy car.
I recommend that anyone who doesn't want to have their car in the shop more than the road stay away from this car. If you love the car like I do (wish I didn't) then buy it, but be warned that anything at anytime could go wrong.
MX-6 LS Standard Transmission.
Love the car.
Has 350,000 Klicks on it and still going.
Takes a lickin and keeps on tickin.
I leave moded civics in the dust. 95 times out of 100.
I love my MX6. I got a 93 with a 2.5L and it had 160 000km on it till I burnt the motor in it, which was my fault for driving 4 hours with it without oil. I put a new motor in it (used that is), and I keep up with a Camaro with a 305 in it... never had a problem with except for the burnt motor which was my fault.
I'm now scared yet optimistic I am currently going to embrace myself and make the dare move to purchase a decent looking 1993 MX 6. I test drove it and it runs good. Body job not bad for a 13 year old car. Not bad at all. Only one owneer. Asking for 700 bucks that's what scares me off. Rims, Radio, Ac, its beautiful. I don't understand why... he wouldn't ask for more. I hope I don't get screwed over by purchasing it next Saturday. I really hope it won't have to go to the mechanic every 2 seconds. I hope itll get me to point a and to point b in one piece.
I have a 1993 MX-6 with the 2.0 It seems that the transmission will not drop down into a lower gear for easier start off any suggestions. From what I gather it is a CF4-EL transmission.
OK where do I start... I've owned a Mazda MX6 for 13 years now - bought it new in October 1994 in Sacramento California. My son was three years old; he is now 16 and the new driver at the car. The car has 220,000 miles on it. Yes, I've had my share or issues with it, but I don't think it is out of the ordinary. In 13 years, I've replaced the timing belt three times, water pump every time I replace the timing belt. Distributor twice, gaskets on the engine head covers -- you know I had the oil on the spark pulgs thing - this was not cheap. CV boots once, brakes - front twice, rear once, 3 batteries, many, many oil chages -- every 3000 miles, air conditioning compressor, air conditioning fan, clutch, power door switch, and antenna. oh, yeah - I had the radio issue, but that was an easy fix - got an alpine many moons ago. We also have the loud knock turning left; I lived with it for 13 years. I think my son can live it for a few more.
I think that is about it. I don't think that is too bad. Yeah there quite a few things on the list, but take a look at the mileage again. 220,000 miles and I can smoke many newer cars out there.
Oh, if you know how I can fix the loud noise when turning, let me know. thanks.
I bought a 93 mx6 roughly 2.5 years ago. One week later it was in the shop getting a new transmission. Within one month it was back in the shop 3 times with transmission problems. It was finally fixed! Over the next year, We've had to replace the starter, alternator, belts, plugs&wires, fuel filter, battery, radiator, and transmission cooler. It ran great for awhile. Now once again I'm having transmission problems and its been parked for 2 months. I just don't know what else to do, but set it on fire. I love the car so that's why I haven't yet!
Too bad a lot of you got stuck with a POS. It's related to the Ford Probe, which is a complete pile of garbage. According to these posts, it looks as though a lot of people have fallen in love with this car due to it's sporty look. Just a word to the wiser, however. Stay AWAY from this mechanical abortion of a car, you'll be glad you did. Go and buy a Subaru or something. Cheers!
I don't know how to respond to the "problem" cars with issues. I do own a 1995 Mazda Mx-6 (automatic) with 97,000 miles on it, and for a 13 year old car I have owned for 3 years, nothing has gone wrong with it.
It's actually a miracle because I punch the gas every time some one passes me just to get in front of them. I race it with my friends a lot.
No problems like anyone has posted; it runs like a true car, everything works on it. The acceleration on the car and its handling are what I love about it.
Only two things have happened with this car, and they are not even bad. I had to replace the spark plug wires (worn and torn); that cost 80$.
The only other thing is I got hit by another car, and had to have it fixed, and now there is some rattling going over rough roads after the incident; don't know if it's worth fixing because I just turn the music up a little and I'm good.
This car is more reliable than I would have guessed. It's a car I can count on to get me where I need to go after abusing it with high speeds and sharp turns at high speeds and drifting. This car will always be my favorite little red monster.
Hope all of you get a real car like the one I bought with no problems.
I bought a second generation 1992 MX6 in 2001. It had 165,000kms on the clock. Now at 275,000 and still running beautifully.
A few problems along the way. The automatic gear box needed replacing early on as did the rear wheel steering rack (so that's why the previous owner sold it). The steering rack went again recently. The motor in the driver's window winding mechanism is sounding pretty sad. Apart from that, just routine repairs one might expect with a 16 year old vehicle showing that many kilometres. Unfortunately, there are signs that the valves are starting to wear and I might be due for a serious overhaul in a year or two.
This car really is a delight to drive, especially on long winding mountain roads, and the classic styling never seems to date. One person recently asked me if this was a new Mazda model (I do keep the car in immaculate condition). I have no regrets about buying this car, my only regret will be when I finally part with it - may that be far in the future.
I've owned two 1993 Mazda MX-6s. The first was a 6cyl with 192,000 miles on it. I had very little trouble with it aside from a major issue with the distributor. The engine would die when it was warmed up and after cooling for about 10 minutes would start again. My mechanic found a hair-line fracture in the distributor that expanded with heat to cause an electrical gap, so that no spark could get to the plugs. The part was $600 to replace (brand new).
I just bought my second MX6, this time a 4cyl with 123,000 miles for $2,000.00 with all service records showing quite a few repair items, all of which would be expected on a car this old. The car runs great except for a recent starting problem, which is intermittent and hard to understand. Basically, the engine will turn over sluggishly sometimes and not start, and other times it will start like a champ. New battery doesn't help. I did notice the battery loosing its charge with both the AC and head lights on, but the starting problem has been during the day when the lights aren't used.
I love this car's handling, and like others I've heard from, hate it when things go wrong (the car is generally touchy), but like the car so much I'm willing to put up with it.
I have a 1994 MX6, 6cylinder LS.
I've had problems with the distributor caused by a bad head cover gasket. The oil gets in the spark plug chamber and causes the spark plug to short out the distributor. It happens to a lot of cars with that type of set up. Only a true mechanic will know that.
You all think you bought a bad car; that is just normal ware and tear. Most of the cars in the US have the same problem.
This car will out last any Chevy past or present, cause the Chevy have their usual problem; alternator, fuel pump, transmissions, fan belt, drive starters. Do you want me to keep on going?
The problems with the MX6 are due to cheap American manufactured parts that just last a week. Tell me I'm wrong. If you buy the JDM parts like I do, you would not have these problems. Aftermarket parts in the long run are cheaper and more reliable.
Word to those who think they bought melons. Why buy a sport car when you know you can't afford to fix it.
That car is one of the best cars that came out that year. My car out performs the 2006-2007 Chevy Vette with the JDM motor I swapped. The problem also is the emmissioned motor the Japanese have to install when the car comes to America. The motor that the American MX6 has is a piece of crap. Put a JDM motor in and your car will never give you any of these problems guaranteed. The reason the Japanese comply is to sell cars. Making their cars slower than the American cars assures them great sales in the US market, cause if they made a car that out did US cars, there would not be another Mazda dealership in sight in the US. If the Japanese left the cars JDM spec, there would be no one buying American.
Peace.
The knocking noise in the front-end is the lower control arm bushings.
Mine is a 1994 MX6 2.0, which runs great but smokes like hell when cold. Once it's warmed up it's good and doesn't smoke hardly in summertime, only in winter the most (sitting over night).
It needs struts and the driver's door is starting to sag a bit.
Great lookin car / drivers like a race car, so nimble. I love it and it turns plenty of heads!
I bought it for 400 bucks from good friend who found a big bag of money LOL.
Love it. It needs a little work, but it's worth it. The gas mileage is great with freakin cold A/C! And moon roof!
