I have an 2003 Chevy TB and add mine to the list as well. I have around 65k miles and I am now having problems with the fan clutch. They told me it would cost around $650.00 to fix.
Just got my fan clutch fixed. Cost me $200 for the fan clutch on line. Luckily, I was referred to a German mom & pop's mechanic (military). He charged me about $150 and a case of Bud Lite...! Thank goodness. This mechanic has been working on cars for 45 years, and he said that GM has lost its quality control over the last 15 years, and I believe him.
Now all I have to do is take it to a GM dealer here in Germany so they can reset my check engine light. And that will cost me $50... Damn GM. This is with out a doubt my last american made car...
2004 TB 78k miles - looks like I've got the same problem!!!
Mine also vibrates at high speeds between 67-75 mph. Took it to the dealer, went for a test drive, and said he didn't notice anything!
I have a 2003 Trailblazer LT with the Fan Clutch problem. It is going to cost $560 parts & labor. I have approx. 73K miles, 4 months out of extended warranty. I have contacted GM and after getting through the first level, spoke with someone who saw 3 other cases like mine and GM is going to reimburse me for the repairs. My service manager said he has had no cases of the problem coming back after the repairs were done at his current dealership and at the previous one. (I have dealt with the same service manager at both dealerships and trust him.) Not sure if GM is going to reimburse 50 or 75%, but anything is better than nothing.
I have a GMC Envoy XL 2002 (one of the "triplets"). I'm hard of hearing so I didn't really notice the jet engine noise. A friend borrowed the truck for a week and she complained. Sure enough we found the infamous fan clutch problem.
The dealer in Santa Clara Calif. wanted about $900 to fix it. I'm saving a few bucks by ordering the part from gmpartsdirect (less than $200 incl. shipping/handling) and getting another mechanic to install it (4 hours @ $95).
Didn't expect this with only 55,000 miles on the vehicle. Otherwise I have been reasonably happy with the build quality and ride (somewhat "floaty" handling though).
I'm amazed! I have 105,000 miles on my 2002 Trailblazer and was just advised that my fan clutch has to be replaced. I ordered one on-line and it cost me $120.00. I'm going to try to replace myself, but with the number of miles I have on it, the replacement of the fan clutch doesn't bother me much. This is the first time I've had to spend money on something other than brakes, tires, etc. I love the car and will do what I have to to keep it! Love it!
And the list goes on. 2002 Trailblazer with 29,000 miles. Jet sounds. Tried turning the fan with the engine off and it was stiff. No check engine light yet. I doesn't sound quite as bad as others describe. Its worse when I start at a traffic light or increase speed beyond producing the roar beyond what you would expect to hear or how it sounded previously. I am in the military around many young guys who are all potential GM buyers. I will be sharing my experience.
My concern, with limited financial resources, that if I pay to have this fixed that it will come back. Any word out there on this going away with a fix for most? I may tried to fix it myself at the auto hobby shop. I will call GM to resgister my complaint (will it matter?). I don't think they will offer to pay anything as its beyond the 5 yr. warrenty. I am a patriot - so I guess my future is with Ford or Dodge.
I am the one who said GM is going to reimburse for the repair on my '03 Trailblazer LT. They are going to reimburse 50% and just found out my dealer is going to take care of the rest, so I will owe nothing. Before I would replace anything myself to save money, I would check with GM to see if they will offer any assistance. (It would have to be done at a Certified GM Dealer.) IT NEVER HURTS TO ASK (especially since this is a "Known Problem"!)

The fan clutch was a foul-up, no doubt about it, and a bad one at that. But from what I understand, the mechanical fan clutch setup was replaced with an electric fan, so there the fan clutch is no longer a concern. I do not know what year this change occurred, but 2004 seems to stand out in my head - somebody who knows the exact date/year, please feel free to chime in. I think the trailblazer is a great SUV. It is unfortunate the earlier ones had that issue. Everybody I know who owns one cannot say enough good things about them. I would not hesitate to buy a new one for a second, and in fact am giving it serious thought.
They fixed the problem in 2004 with an electric fan? Sorry to report this, but I leased a new 2007 about a month ago and the jet sound and no acceleration started already. It feels like the transmission is stuck in first, I have to let the transmission idle for several minutes and then I can drive. The problem is intermittent and it's the kind of thing that will probably not occur when you drive it back to the dealer. You would need to leave it overnight and be there when they start it the following morning! Of course, this is a new vehicle and I'm tempted to try to get a replacement under the Lemon Law, which requires 3 service visits for the same problem. If they replace the fan clutch (and I suspect they will after I show them the 10 page printout from this site), who knows if the water pump will go or the brake light or the computer or...
BTW, my previous Trailblazer (2004) did not have this problem and was OK for the most part, but the Blazer I had before that (2001 I believe) definitely had this problem. I brought it back dozens of times and they always told me they couldn't duplicate the problem. They fixed everything, but the fan clutch. I was going to lease a new Toyota RAV4 this time, but I opted to go with the pull-ahead program to get out of my lease early. If I had seen this site 5 weeks ago, I wouldn't be writing this now. Any thoughts about how to approach the dealership? The rest of my thoughts are unprintable...
I have a 2002 TB. At just under 36,000 miles I got the jet engine sound in the morning. Took it in and they said they took care of it under warranty. Haven't had that problem anymore, but noticed that now I never hear the fan. Hot July in MT and engine started heating up and as it did the AC quite working. Now it appears the fan doesn't work at all so when it get warm the AC shuts down. I'm also getting the ticking noise. Is this the fan or water pump or something else. Plan th call GM to issue a complaint.
Another 2003 TB with a fan clutch failure. 53k miles.
I spoke with two very unhelpful customer service reps at GM who could not tell me what is included in recall parameters. I received the PO Box in Detroit for letter writing. I encourage all to do the same. PO Box 33170, Detroit, Michigan 48232-5170. How are some of us getting partial reimbursement and others nothing? Please share the magic as I am out $800 for the repair.
I to have been struck by the clutch fan problem. I have 70,000 miles on it, but mine was changed at 20,000 also and is back again. Now the extended warranty is up. Anyone know if you can remove the clutch and just install a regular fan. It would run all the time, but should be better than changing the clutch every 40,000 miles.
Turned my 2002 TB on this AM to the jet engine noise. I had noticed it earlier every once in a while during the morning. Thought it was just "warming up". However today it did not go away.
Took it to my Chevy Dealer and it will cost 800 to fix the...yep..you guessed it... clutch fan.
I emailed GM regarding assistance and will also be sending a letter to the address in the above post.
I just got my 2003 TB with 101.000 miles, yesterday to be fixed, same problem, the fan clutch. It cost me $720.
I hope not to fixed again until trade it for a Toyota or Nissan.
