I too became the the victim of the fan clutch problem,2002 Trailblazer. I also checked the dealerships and got a quote of approximate $700.00. I went on EBAY and bought a after market clutch for 129.90 and installed it myself, took me about 3 hours to do. I then took it to my GM truck dealership and had the computer flashed, and that took care of the service engine soon light. Just don't understand the dealers outrageous prices. I also own a Ford Explorer and have never experienced this type of problem.

Add me to the list of the TB Fan Clutch problem. I called GM customer service to file a complaint and have been working with them for about 45 days now. I have asked for 50% assistance. They assigned a rep to my case and he has actually followed up with me many times over the past few weeks. I am very hopeful that GM will agree to the reimbursement. As with a few other people, initially you can expect to be blown off by the first customer service rep; however, be persistent and ask to be transferred to the US in order to escalate. I had to escalate two times, and make sure they actually assign you a case number.

Wow that's a lot of people having the same problem LOL. OK, I have a 2002 Trailblazer LT 4x4, bought it from a friend, he drove the hell out of it, has only 76k now. I think he had a few things replaced..

My problems currently are.. A/C won't work on level 5 (as stated above), power steering barely works when turning real slow, and only when I start it up, for the first 30 seconds or so, the fan sounds like a 747, otherwise it's fine..

She does rev a little high though before switching gears.. any ideas??

I have a 2006 Trailblazer. Yep, fan clutch went out at 49,000 miles. I have been reading the postings that go back for several years. With all these years of problems why hasn't GM come up with a solution. Maybe they are making lots of money on the repairs to the fan clutches?

After replacing the fan clutch with GM replacement part, the roaring jet still is still present.

The dealership informed me that the updates to computer are all current, but would be more than happy to troubleshoot what is causing this.

I have read a little about a temperature sensor that controls the fan clutch - what sensor, where is it located? Where can one look up a Technical Service Bulletin online to read further?

I also have fan clutch problems on '04 Trailblazer. Battery was replaced at 60,500+ miles and same day started making clicking noise when A/C was on and pulling engine power down causing vehicle to cut off on occasion when idling. Engine light came on next day and dealer quoted $450 for the part and over $900 total repair. I plan on buying the same part for $170 and attempting replacement on my own or getting someone else to do it. Very upset about whole issue!!!

My 2002 Trailblazer also sounds like a jet engine / dump truck. It used to do it occasionally, now its continuous. The price tag quoted by the dealer was (sit down) $955!! Unbelievable!!! I asked him twice because I could not believe it. I called NAPA and they have the new clutch for $271 - the dealer said it was $450. From the number of comments posted here you would think this should be a recall item.

I didn't like this year newer ones are great. No issues on 2006 and 2008.

I had posted a few months ago that I had been working with GM customer service regarding request for 50% reimbursement on the fan clutch replacement. Found out today that Gm will pay for the half the repair. I suggest that everyone at least try contacting the main Gm customer support line. It was a long process but well worth the effort. Please make sure they issue you a log number. They will at first deny the request however asked to be transferred to the US based customer service center.

Like a broken record. Here we go. 2002 Trail Blazer LTZ 82,000 miles Fan Clutch stuck. Sounds like a jet or a semi next to you on the inter-state. Noticed vibrations at 65-75mph for the last few months. Maybe a new fan clutch and water pump is in store. I also have the outside temp stuck at 50. Will try the $6 repair item. Don't know if I will try the water pump and fan clutch install myself. It will probably be 90 degrees this weekend.

We bought our 2002 TB back in 05 and loved it at first, other than the horrid whistling sound the windshield made when we got over 65, however, since that is the speed limit where we bought it, we never heard it when we test drove the vehicle... LOL... some sealant and tape (tape now removed) that sound has stopped.

Then our tail lights started going out over and over, two new batteries (last week was the most recent), head lights being replaced, and new brakes twice in two years (and now we don't ride the brakes or drive poorly).

Now this week, our TB has started a horrible grinding sound, not the brakes, not anything with the wheel hubs, so UGH, we are at wits end.

Any ideas as to what it might be, because our mechanic is even confused at this point?

We were told to disconnect the 4wd, and that didn't help at all, and yes, we too have had the 4wd change on its own.

It's very disappointing to buy an American vehicle that is so horrible, and to be treated by the company like we, as customers, don't even matter.

Have had 02 Trailblazer since new, only have 60,000 miles now. Had the fan clutch problem intermittently since new. It got so bad had it replaced by dealer Nov. 07, at a cost of almost $900.00. Problem returned April 08. Car is at dealer now, they said the will try to update computer, but also it has throttle body carbon buildup, which they want $164.00 to clean. Help!

Posted today about 02 trailblazer with fan clutch stuck intermittently since new, repaired by dealer Nov. 07, over $800.00. Same problem April 08. Found out about recalls.gov. Suggest everyone goes to site and file complaint. They have resources and documents from GM answering problems.

Well I love our 2002 LT but it has certainly had it's share of these problems and more. I ordered it and at 17,000 miles we got the first SES light due to fan clutch while on vacation in CA. Local dealer reset the code and could not get it to repeat. Did it again on the way home and our dealer reprogrammed the PCM to fix it. After several other misc warranty repairs the engine failed at 54,000. Cracked cylinder which GM repaired on Special Program. One week later fan clutch failed. Dealer charged $475 to replace but I appealed to GM and they reimbursed me for the cost. 30,000 miles later next fan clutch fails. I replaced it myself. 23,000 miles later fan clutch #3 goes. At 131,000 the water pump fails (March of 2008). Now this week at 137,000 miles fan clutch #4 has failed! Just nabbed one off of eBay for $120 and I am quite good at replacing them now.

Nice truck but lousy execution on quality. GM has replaced under warranty taillights, headlight housing, clutch fan #1, engine (yes the entire engine), and door seals.

I have replaced #2, 3, and 4 fan clutches, water pump, front stabilizer links, door speaker, battery cable, HVAC control actuator, power window actuator, plus normal wear items like tires and battery.

I'm keeping it until it dies for good!

Got a TB LTZ 2003 last september 07. Around 90000Km, got tha fan clutch problem. Now it's a bearing that's making weird sound. Otherwise, nothing major.
