The up/down buttons on the steering wheel are for when you put the gear shift into M mode. The up and down buttons on the wheel will allow you to then manually move up and down the gears.

The M is for driving the car as a manual, so if you choose it, the car will not change; you need to press up or down to manually change gears without a clutch.

I own a Harrier 2000, and it's a superb car to drive apart from the relatively high fuel consumption, especially for town running. The up and down buttons on your steering wheel are for manually controlling the gear transmission. You do this by shifting the the gear lever left to the M position. This means you have the option of taking more control of the car by changing the gears yourself like you would in a manual car.

The up and down buttons are for changing gears after putting the gear lever on "M". You can use either set, left or right, whatever is convenient to you.

The buttons on the steering wheel are to change gear when M is selected.

I have 1998 Toyota Harrier 3.0. The up and down buttons on the steering wheel are not working?

Does anyone have an idea about it?
