It could be the VVTI sensors. If they are faulty the car will feel like it's starved of fuel, then the revs ODM will go haywire and you will have trouble starting the engine and idling. Once you have replaced both VVTI sensors the car will go back to normal.

The gas filter is in the tank. You have to remove the left rear seat and the carpet, then you will find the opening to the tank.
