1992 Toyota MR2 N/A review from Australia and New Zealand
"Good value/Big smile"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Nothing yet, I haven't owned this car for very long, but I do need to get the timing belt replaced, along with the drivers (right) side real wheel bearing.
General comments?
This car is absolutely brilliant. I started off driving a Daihatsu Charade, and after that... another Daihatsu Charade! They were great fun cars, but the MR2 is so much more...
An extremely comfortable ride, plenty of room in the cabin (I am 6'3"). Has a strong motor, the clutch and gearbox feel great, the brakes are good, and the fuel economy is excellent for a 2 litre.
The handling of this car is amazing, in the wet and dry (I still haven't had the back come out in the wet). The original suspension is in good nick, and will get the car through any corner at decent speed. Rear tires are wearing a lot faster than the fronts, but I suppose that is due to the weight on the wheels back there.
Only modification I have done so far is the pod filter (oiled type). It seems to make a lot of noise, but has left a flat spot at about 4500-5000rpms. I'll be having a talk to my mechanic when I get the timing belt done.
I have also heard about these cars, that you should replace the O2 sensor if it has not already been done. It should result in far better fuel economy and all round better engine performance.
At the moment, on a tank of 98octane BP, I get 470km/41 litre fill (tank is 55 litre, but the light was on).
The car.
If you ever get the chance to buy one of these cars, and it hasn't been thrashed, make sure you do. I had mine inspected by a mechanic before purchasing, it is worth doing. I am very, very happy with my purchase.
