1992 Nissan Maxima GXE review from North America

"A true high-performance family sedan"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Exhaust manifold studs stretched, requiring replace. One covered by warranty, other I paid for.

Connection at top of fuel pump failed at 170,000 k., required replacement of fuel pump.

Timing belt tensioner bolt sheared at approx 180,000 k. Bent all 24 valves & required head job, etc.

Transmission failed abruptly at 285,000 k.

A/C compressor failed gradually 250,000 -> 260,000 k. It was then so noisy it was disconnected.

Rear struts very weak in cold (-10 C.) weather, OK at +0 C.)

The electric locking system has become intermittent -- some days it works, others it doesn't. Really an inconvenience.

General comments?

I first drove a Maxima before I could afford one, and thought "Wow, finally a car which performs like it has a V-8 in it." Years later, in a different Maxima, with 300,000+ k. - same feeling!

First of all it fulfills that most basic requirement: it starts quickly, every time, in all weather.

Second, I think I've had some bad luck, as the things which broke were major components, or in the case of the tensioner bolt, a minor component with major consequences. (I could accept the transmission failure, but wish it was not sudden.)

Third, I still believe this is a fabulous car. It is still quiet and comfortable, has little wind noise, handles and brakes well, and when I push it, goes like stink.

Fourth, it has always been worth repairing as the intrinsic quality and solidity is there.

Fifth, the car has an interesting edge which makes it interesting. It is not as flawlessly quiet as a Honda Accord, and it is probably not quite as well built as a Toyota Camry. But I think a Honda would be worn out by now, and Camry is like automotive stodge. The Maxima has move presence.

Sixth, some people criticize the styling used in this series, though it is a bit bland to the rear. But I've always liked it, like watching the way other Maxima's move, like walking up the street and seeing mine in the driveway. Yeah!!

I'm using Michelin X-1 tires because of their fabulous warranty, I just keep taking them back for replacement when they wear out. Good all-round tire for use here in Nova Scotia.
