2008 Cadillac DTS 4.6 Northstar V8 from North America

Summary:

It's a great car. Try one

Faults:

Power steering pressure line.

Secondary air injection valve which caused a check engine light along with strong exhaust odors and disabled the remote start.

3 tire pressure sensors died ($75 each).

Parking sensor on rear bumper broke loose ($136).

Fuel pump went out which burned up a relay damaging the fusebox.

The car currently had 3 engine oil leaks - all minor. 1 has been fixed, the other 2 aren't worth fixing.

General Comments:

I bought the car mainly as a toy to use on weekends and off days. I wound up using it daily for a little over 3 years after my everyday car was rear ended and totaled. It was reliable during that time until the fuel pump went and cost almost $1300 to fix. I bought a brand new car after that and repurposed this car back to being a casual toy. It had about 75,000 miles on it by then.

Currently the car has 2 minor oil leaks which aren't worth fixing. It had 3, but I had 1 fixed which was the oil filter adapter housing. It doesn't leave any spots underneath and I've never had to add any oil between changes.

I've heard some gripes about the Northstar engine, but other than a few minor oil leaks, I haven had any problems. It provides more than enough power for any driving situation, sounds fantastic, and gets pretty good mileage if you keep your foot out of it - which could be hard to do at times. It makes a big car fun and somewhat exciting to drive, and I'll even say it's the best Cadillac V8 engine ever made next to the 472. It sounds and behaves almost like an old Cadillac engine - even has a similar exhaust note. But the Northstar has serious top end performance which the old Cadillac engines didn't have.

The transmission is a typical GM 4 speed transaxle so I don't expect any trouble there. I keep up on all my fluid changes which includes coolant every 4-5 years done at the GM dealer, transmission every 50,000 miles also done at the GM dealer, oil changes annually using full synthetic and AC Delco oil filter.

Overall it's a great car for having a good time in your leisure. It's roomy and comfortable enough for friends and family and they'll appreciate its luxury features. The heated and cooled seats are great. It has telematic navigation via OnStar, but I just use my phone. The 8 speaker stereo is fantastic and it has a 3.5mm jack for MP3 which is good.

My experience with the DTS and my previous Fleetwood has been great and has made me a believer in the Cadillac brand. I'll try an XTS AWD next.

Thanks for the insightful review :)

The Northstars of this vintage were well-sorted at this point.

As you noted, the carefully curated torque curve couples well with the 4-speed (wide-ratio) Hydramatic for good drivability and performance :)

You will never regret keeping up with your fluid/filter changes :)

It is an honest review, but I have heard so many bad things about this engine - some say all Northstar engines are to be avoided, others say it depends which one. Does anyone know which were the best years for this engine?

2003 and beyond the head bolt issues were resolved. Yes, 11 years after the debut of the Northstar. You still have to be careful if the engine overheats. Aluminum block and heads.

2008 Cadillac DTS Platinum 4.6 V8 from North America

Summary:

Love it to death!!

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

This car belonged to my aunt and this was her second vehicle. It was always garage kept since new. It only had 56000 miles on it. It's all black.

When I got the car 3 months ago, the car was in pristine condition. She called me and asked me if I wanted to buy it, and I said yes. So I bought it for $13000 and drove it home. Still kept in a garage and the black paint shines like a diamond!!

The 4.6 V8 has impressive performance. Just step on the gas and away you go. Loves the interstates! Gas mileage is OK, but that's what you get when you buy a car like this.

It's huge inside and out!! Seats are so comfortable. It's as if you're sitting on a leather couch. The front seats are both heated and cooled. The massage feature is great for people like me with back problems. The trunk is huge.

I truly love this car. It hasn't been driven in snow ever since day 1. If you're looking for a car for special occasions or simply for pleasure trips on nice sunny days, then you must see and drive these cars.

You paid $13K for a 2008 Cadillac DTS?

That's about 3 times what these cars usually sell for.

Oh well. Auntie must have been laughing all the way to the bank. ;)

Must be a typo ;) Surely he meant $1300...

Was thinking the same thing myself.

Pristine condition, very low miles, you’ll pay toward the upper end of the price range. Not really surprising at all actually.

13th Mar 2021, 21:31

True, but the Northstar engine has a well known bad reputation. Anyone who knows this will not pay such a premium price. 2008 American luxury model with low miles, you are better off with a Lincoln Town Car at that price.

Some of the mid 2000’s Lincolns such as the LS also had some issues. At least with Town Cars, it would be easy to find them in pristine condition. Most owners of those seem to be elderly and not drive much.

The LS really wasn't in the same class as the Town Car and DeVille /DTS. Most mechanical parts were engineered by Jaguar which explains some of the issues they had.

Yes, it's not very difficult to find a used Town Car in near mint condition.

I'm in my early 40s and am on my 2nd Town Car in the last 14 years. With a little over 100k at the purchase, both were almost in brand new condition when I bought them, and both have been very reliable, as my first one (96 model) still ran great at 240k when it was sold.

I like big Cadillacs too, but don't care for the Northstar and the fact that they are FWD. My favorites are the full size RWD cars they made in the late 70s - late 80s minus the model years 82-85 because of the HT 4100. Another terrible Cadillac engine. Good thing they borrowed the Olds V8 after 85 and kept the RWD cars alive much longer.

It's a low mileage garage kept, one owner Platinum edition. Yes he overpaid, but not 3 times as much.
