1992 Chevrolet Cavalier 4 door 2.2L from North America

Summary:

Lemons?

Faults:

Alternator & battery at 40,000km.

Struts at 60,000km.

Alternator (again) at 65,000km.

Evaporator at 75,000km.

Both ignition coils replaced at 80,000 due to "near" stalling in wet/rainy conditions. Seemed to fix the problem, though now 1 year later, it is starting to act up again in rain.

Shocks at 90,000.

Serpentine belt has been changed 3 times.

Breaks have been changed 5 times in 6 years of ownership (and no, I don't ride on my brakes and I hate people that do) >;-)

Windshield washer fluid dispersement has always been poor (especially in winter).

ABS brakes are very sensitive - annoying (not to mention dangerous) to say the least.

Quite a bit of rusting on the lower half of the body and doors... a friend has a 93', rust is even worse on his. Not good.

Cigarette lighter keeps dying. I've given up replacing them - just make sure I carry a lighter with me now!

I know there is more, but I can't remember it all!

General Comments:

I've spent approx. $6000 on repairs (not including regular maintenance - oil changes, tune-ups etc.).

Good points; It's never stalled or completely broke down leaving me stranded.

Car is parked outside - we have brutal winters here and it has never had a problem starting in freezing weather.

Manouvers well in the snow.

For such low mileage, I shouldn't have had to pour so much $ into repairs.

Would not recommend. A headache for the most part.

1992 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 Convertible V6 from North America

Summary:

Good price/fun ratio

Faults:

One master cylinder replaced @ 50K miles.

Struts in very bad condition @ 70K miles.

Alternator has been making noise for 1 year but still works (car used with max. A/C continuously).

Seals (windows, soft top) damage quickly.

Maintenance cost for the last 2 years: Fluids + $200

General Comments:

A very affordable convertible fully equipped with a nice V6 3.1 engine.

Comfort is not the first quality but overall performance very good in its class.

Don't forget it's the top for this model!!
