1996 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2 from North America

Summary:

1996 has problems

Faults:

My timing chain actually broke in two places at 44000 miles.

Now I am smelling gas inside the car and in the motor (I have no idea what this is from).

When the timing chain went out, I had to get a new valve and EGR valve also.

At 44000 miles my left wheel bearing went bad too.

General Comments:

I think this year of the Cavalier has bad timing chain problems after reading all of these comments. When I bought the car, I changed the brakes and rotorsm and my driver's side ones were awful.

I've had my '96 Dr 2.2l for about over 3 years, & I had a fuel leak from the injectors that was coming in all the way to the driver's seat, & my mechanic found the problem (cracked inj. on the inj rail) & after a few tries fixed it, but had to buy the o-ring (kit $25) & I bought some used inj. at a junk yard for about ($10) versus paying ($100+) for new ones (took a chance worked for me). Just kinda sorted my chances as I went along.

1996 Chevrolet Cavalier from North America

Summary:

Best car I ever drove!

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

I bought this car in January of 2005. It's been a great car. It gets about 30 miles/per gallon. It has great performance. It hasn't let me down once. It starts on the coldest of mornings with no problem. It handles great. I haven't had to do much with it, aside from basic maintenance. I check it regularly for oil, transmission fluid, etc. No problems whatsoever.

I couldn't believe all the negative feedback on this particular model. I would highly recommend this car to everyone. I will hate to get rid of it when the time comes. I'll probably keep it until it's on its last leg.

1996 Chevrolet Cavalier 2d Z24 Coupe from North America

Summary:

I love this car

Faults:

The engine will need to be rebuilt on the vehicle soon due to a as of yet unknown oil disappearance problem. Car is consuming oil at an average of 1 quart every week and a half. There are no leaks and oil is not coming out the exhaust (being burned when it hits the catalytic converter most likely).

General Comments:

I love this car. I had a 95 Z24 and loved that one too. I was gifted with a 99 Saturn SL1 and although it was great on gas, I hated driving it.

This car handles great, everything (else) works correctly. The car looks great considering its age and location. Even though I am looking at a repair bill more than the car is 'worth', I still love this car. It is good on gas considering it is a Z24 and I expect to have this car for a long time.

1996 Chevrolet Cavalier 2 door from North America

Summary:

Very Reliable - Great 1st car

Faults:

Head gasket blew needed to be replaced 3 times in 4 years.

Dents easily. A deer ran into the passenger side of the car, hit a plastic mailbox - no damage to mail box, but car.

Engine made popping noise when acceleration from 0-40.

Water pump broke.

Leaked anti-freeze.

Previous owner installed manual flip up moon-roof..leaked.

Gas line froze with half a tank of gas.

General Comments:

Car lasted 172k miles. Could most likely go more, but I want a new car and don't want to pay almost $200 to fix the water pump.

Chevy's last long. Bought car for 5500 and definetly got my moneys worth and more.

Very reliable.

For a small car its rather roomy inside compared to a look-a-like Ford Escort.

Very decently sized trunk space.

If I were to purchase this car again, i would buy new, I like the model better.

The cobalt is a upgraded version and sharp.
