Sorry, my dear. No matter what you say, you absolutely DID NOT beat a Mustang or Camaro of any kind. I owned a 1994 Camaro Z-28, and there was no way a Cavalier was going to take me. Even with mods, that engine won't even compete with a V-Tech, let alone a small block. No B.S., please.

Yea I've got a z24 same year and have also beat a few camaros so dude no b.s. from u.

I love it when people with small, inferior cars get called on their bs, and then immediately resort to talking about some mythical, "modified" car that they read about or heard about once, the same model as theirs before some guy turned it into a $50,000 pro street or funny car, that blows away everything at the track. Therefore, so can theirs, the reasoning goes. Just because you passed a Mustang or Camaro at the stoplight before he got rolling when the light turned green doesn't mean that you beat them in a race. Modified, modified, modified. You could modify it by strapping a Saturn V rocket to it and blasting it to the moon, but it would still just be an old Z24 Cavalier.

I will have to agree with her, my 2000 Z24 and stomp my dads z28 at the line (about 100ft) depending on his traction. But also I would have to say it most unlikly that a Cavalier can beat any muscule car. I would rather have a Camaro.

I have a 2000 z24 and I've also beaten 5.0s with it, and all I've got in it is a K&N cool air intake and a flow master exhaust kit on it, so bring your 5.0 to the line anytime buddy.

This isn't that complicated just go look up some times/specs for these cars and compare, that will tell you which is faster.

10th Jun 2006, 11:09

I also have a Cavalier Z24 and I am always the first one from the lights, 150h.p. may not seem to be a lot, but put that much into a compact car and it does.

My dad has a 1986 Ford Mustang V8, and I have beat him from the line with my 2001 Chevy Cavalier Z24, the Mustang has a ton of horsepower, but it has no traction so he just sits there and spins the tires while I have already met the finish line. I love my Cavalier and I wouldn't trade it for a Mustang or Camaro any day...

Its rather easy to beat a fox body mustang when those old 5.0s put out 300 lb/ft of torque coupled with a light rear end.

You beating an AWD turbo talon is nearly impossible. Unless the talon was an automatic or the driver missed a shift.

This whole thread is ridiculous. I have friends that have modded engines and bored them out in there z24s gutted and all. Even with a 100 shot of nitrous, the best I have seen from a Cavalier is a 13.8. BEST.

And the whole beating a 96 Talon is rubbish unless it wasn't running correctly. Please don't BS on a forum, it doesn't make you more of a person and it gives other z24 owner false hopes.

I'm still with her... I have a z24 and I've beaten numerous 5.0's with it. I'm not saying all of them, each race has different factors that go along with it. But I am saying it's not impossible and it's done more often than you know. Just because you may not have been beaten, doesn't mean you won't. We aren't trying to say that our 2.4L are the best out there because we know that they aren't. We just want the credit for what we do have and what we can do without having to argue with people who weren't there and are stubborn and close-minded.

The reason, and only reason, that a stock or lightly modified z-24 cavalier might beat a 5.0 mustang is because those particular vehicles (especially the fox body) have such poor traction due to it being a rwd with little to no weight in the rear, and as far as the claims that they are beating z28's and turbo eagle talons with little to no modification to the engine is complete BS.

Please everyone. I also drive a Cavalier, and I can personally say that a Mustang can take it any day of the week, unless it is being towed or the driver is sleeping. A BONE-STOCK Cavalier would never rank with a Mustang, and a TA for sure. Every Cavalier mod junkie out there that says they ran a Pony and won are probably dreaming...

I have a 2000 Z24 with only a short ram intake. I have much bigger plans for the car this winter, but during the summer I have had a lot of fun with it. I go to the open drags every Friday, and up here in Quebec we know about four and six bangers. If you have a stock Z24 and a stock Mustang from 0-100km, you're gonna beat him if you know how to drive.

The gear ratio in the 2000 Z24 is very good, and so are the shift points. I'm not saying the Z24 is the best stock car you can buy... but for the price it's pretty hard to beat.

For all you muscle car lovers, well your generation is over, because I've seen four cylinder's beat 600 and up muscle car's. It's nothing to see and four cylinder with up to a thousand horsepower. My friend has an Acura 96 with 789 WHP and it's a 1.6, 4 CYLINDER, which will make a Porsche or Ferrari look like crap, so just imagine how it would make Mustang or Camaro look.

Yeah, You want to be muscle car guys with your "fox body" mustangs are trying to fill this forum with nothing, but B.S. so just let the person with the review tell their story and respect that, jeez. A Z24 Cavalier is a good vehicle for the price hands down.

One must love the people who have never owned a Z24, nor have ever driven a Z24 like to shoot it down. Now Cavaliers aren't the best cars in the world, I'll admit. They get a bad rep from the domestic crowd because its built like an import. The Imports don't like them because its still a Chevy.

However. The 2.4 mixed with the Getrag 5 speed transmission (used in 2000, 2001, & 2002) (96-99 used Isuzu 5 speed, and 95 had a 2.3 Quad 4) Does have incredible amount of torque off the line. Mixed with good tires, while most cars are still spinning, the Z has grabbed and gone.

My 2000 Z is all bottom end speed. I would like to see my third and fourth gears act a little stronger...

My best time is 14.8. I've beaten a retro-body GT Mustang from a roll, with me being behind and him trying to cut me off (until I hit my governor at 109... then I lost). I've beaten a non-hemi new charger off the line... was able to miss shift while he was in the suicide lane, keep ahead of him, and the guy rode my ass at 95 MPH till he turned off... he was trying to pass me, but we were on curvy 2 lane roads and my car corners so much better. I've also killed LS and GSR integras, Civic SIs (the older ones with the B16), Dodge Neons, Mazda 3s, a Mazda RX8 (Over Steer killed this guy)
