1998 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.1L SFI from North America

Summary:

Great car when it works!

Faults:

AC - 3 days after purchase, AC compressor comes and goes at will.

Alternator - Had to be replaced with little or no warning.

Engine (twice) - engine replaced twice for loud ticking on cold starts. (thank god for extended warranty)

Intake Manifold Gasket - Leaking coolant into the engine, VERY costly repair.

Blower Motor - Blower quit working on speeds 1 & 2.

Water pump - Went out with little or no warning.

All in all, this car was GREAT when it worked, I truly enjoy it all of its nice features, BUT I learned my lesson about making impulse buys. I bought it in 2001 with 44,xxx miles and recently totaled it with 108,xxx miles. Goodbye and Goodriddins!

1998 Chevrolet Malibu 4.6 from North America

Summary:

A nightmare waiting to happen

Faults:

I bought my 98 Malibu only 2 months ago. After reading these reviews, I am horrified and scared for the safety of myself and my 2 young children when driving this vehicle. As well as many other drivers, my air will not start until put at 3, it then will flicker on and off. I truly thought it was a malfunction within my vehicle.

Every time the battery is disconnected the pin on the gas gage gets stuck straight down. I have to manually push it back up (sticking anything available in the small opening at the mile setter). To this day, it won't read above half a tank. So my car being the gas guzzler it is, I never know how much gas I have.

One thing that really scares me is when I'm coming to a stop, w/the pedal to the brake pedal at the floor, it accelerates forward.

When making turns, my steering wheel makes horrible rumbling/creaking sounds as if the whole thing's just going to fall off.

I'm almost convinced the dealers know a way of making all of this dis noticeable when allowing someone to check these vehicles out.

I never dreamed of such reviews on a car that I own. It seems so unreal, like this type of performance from a car would never be aloud.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu Inline 4 from North America

Summary:

A decent first car, but when one thing goes, it's done for

Faults:

Alternator blew at 25,000 miles.

Tires had to be replaced at 30,000 miles.

Brakes are failing, will need to be replaced.

Air conditioning either works intermittently (shutting on and off, fan only blowing cold at setting 3 or 4) or not at all (fan blowing hot air at every setting)

Handles poorly, you can feel every bump in the road.

Gas gage display change of 1/4 tank when car is stopped vs. when it is moving.

Constant whirring or thumping sound under the hood.

Radiator cover fell off after 25k miles.

Car occasionally shakes violently when traveling at 60-70mph.

General Comments:

This was my first car, and it served its purpose well until things started to go wrong with it.

I plan on selling it before even more things go wrong.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu from North America

Summary:

Disappointment and big waste of $$$

Faults:

Brakes and Rotors replaced 3 times at about 35,000km.

A/C - Heater Fan replaced and not working again at settings 1 & 2...apparently a know problem with a resistor.

Tires replaced at 50,000...apparently the pressure must be different between the back tires and front tires. Check with your dealer or mechanic.

Strut Mounts noisy and need replacing at 500+ per side at about 50,000km... not done yet.

Intake Gasket cracked and replaced at about 60,000km.

Last week, while driving in the passing lane of a major highway, the cable from the gas pedal snapped in half leaving me with no acceleration.

Currently, wheel bearing noise at 60km. Need to be replaced at $400.00 per bearing.

NEED I SAY MORE???

General Comments:

This car looks nice and drives well when it is working properly..well, other than feeling every bump on the road.

What a disappointment! What a piece of crap! No tune up required for XYZ kms because the car will fall apart before you need one.

Don't buy one unless all the above mentioned repairs have been done and the total cost of the car is under $500.00.

By the way, certain Chevrolet Vans have the exact same engine which is known by GM to have intake and head gasket leaks. GM did a recall on the van engine, but not the Malibu.
