1998 Chevrolet Malibu Basic 3.1 from North America

Summary:

Love my Malibu, most of the time

Faults:

First problem with our Malibu was the air conditioner constantly flipping settings.

Our block heater was replaced at a little over 100,000km.

The battery has been replaced.

The brakes have been replaced twice, rotors once.

The main problem is the fuel pump or something constantly whining when the car is on.

There is a problem with the coolant overflowing its tank, possibly a leak, but hasn't been found yet.

General Comments:

This car is very nice to drive.

It has excellent acceleration, and the Anti lock braking system is a nice addition.

The stock stereo with CD player has excellent sound.

Amazing trunk space. We have moved a large treadmill with ease.

The backseat fits 3 people comfortably.

Overall this is a good vehicle, but make sure you know where it has been.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.1 liter V6 from North America

Summary:

Quality is poor even though we as a family like the comfort and styling

Faults:

Brake rotors had to be replaced 3 times while under the 36,000 mile warranty. Finally I replaced them again myself at 60,000 cause they were warped again. I replaced them with OEM spec. rotors and they seem to be working great!

Fan switch would not work on speed 2 and had to be fixed.

A/C switches from max to normal on its own. Or sometimes it switches off. Will be fixed under the extended warranty.

Water pump went out at 60,000 miles. Dealer fixed under warranty.

Rear brake lights where the electrical wiring plugs into the socket, signs of overheating.. (melting around the connection)

The ABS light now stays on all the time... will be fixed under extended warranty maybe... Mentioned this to the dealer 2 years ago about intermittent problem... now stays on all the time... told me sensor might have dirt on it.

Engine oil seeping around the head gasket around the 55,000 mile mark. Dealer fixed under warranty.

Headlights always have moisture in them after a car wash.

General Comments:

Overall... the quality of this car is not very good!! Seems even the dealer knows this when you take it in for repairs over the last 5 years. When you tell them the problems... always the same remark... It's common with the Malibu... especially the warped rotors, bad water pump, switch problems on the fan speeds, and the bad A/C switch. I mean... this engine has been around for years... they put it in numerous makes. There ahould not be this many problems. The bugs have should have been worked out by the engineers years ago!! I guess that's why Japanese built cars always lead the pack in quality workmanship.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu LS V6 from North America

Summary:

This car is a piece of junk

Faults:

Alternator has been replaced twice. Battery has been replaced twice.

Electrical system has never been right. The brakes lights have to be replaced constantly. The indicator light for the emergency brake doesn't work (and was fixed which lasted about a month). The lights on the gear shift don't work so you can't see what gear you're in at night.

Seals around the rear tail light have never been right, constantly fills with water, even after supposedly fixed.

The A/C turns on and off randomly. Had the panel replaced at about 50,000 miles which fixed it, but it started doing it again at 90,000 miles.

The brakes and rotors have to be replaced constantly, costing about $400 each time. Absolutely ridiculous. Brakes make a high pitched squealing noise even after being fixed.

The leather seats cracked open at about 80,000 miles. Even after conditioning was done periodically.

General Comments:

I will never buy this car or any other Chevrolet again. It has been nothing, but trouble and hassle from the day I got it.

I can see from the above comments that the chevy malibu is not a reliable car, but you have put almost 140,000 miles on it in 4 years time, I'm sorry, but you must have really beat on this car for the problems you mentioned above!
