1988 Citroen AX TZS 1.4 from France

Faults:

Fragility of the car.

Not handles like it's on rails at all.

General Comments:

Great motor, easy to repair and nervous.

This version (tzs) have many things like electric windows or centralized locking, rare in 1988 on this type of car.

1988 Citroen AX 14 TZS 1.4 petrol (carburettor) from Switzerland

Summary:

Practical and fun to drive

Faults:

Front suspension became worn out after about 115000 km, although some bearings were already replaced.

Front brake discs became warped quite quickly.

Radiator started leaking (could be fixed with a sealing fluid).

Due to poor build quality, there was a lot of rattling, and many broken plastic pieces.

Driver's seat was completely worn out (not only the cushions, the frame as well). And I'm no heavyweight, neither is the previous owner.

General Comments:

In many places, the car is built too light, and assembled poorly.

Otherwise, it's a very cheap-to-run car that provides a lot of fun.

Its go-kart-like roadholding makes it fun to drive.

The seats are not made for long travel, and back legroom is quite restricted.

The boot is very practical, versatile and amazingly large for such a small car.

1988 Citroen AX 10E Splash 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very satisfactory small car: economical and nippy

Faults:

Dodgy electrics.

Rear brake valve seized.

Weak handbrake.

Minor rust.

General Comments:

This has been my first car and so far it hasn't let me down.

The car seems very economical and is quite cheap to run.

Performance is OK for a 1 litre. Acceleration is fairly nippy and it copes OK with motorway speeds of 70mph+.

It is very underpowered once you have 4 people in it or heavier loads in the back.

1988 Citroen AX Platin 1.1 from Bosnia and Herzegovina

Faults:

Alternator regulator, alternator belt.

General Comments:

It's a very good little car.

This car has good power despite the engine size (1.1).

It's very economical, and one of the best cars made for town.

1988 Citroen AX RE 1.1 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A very economical, fun, first car

Faults:

The engine head warped due to excess heat, a result of the fan connection falling out of it's socket. The head gasket blew because of this warping, at 102000 miles.

The coil failed at 103000 miles.

Brake disc's and pad's replaced at 103500 miles.

General Comments:

The Citroen Ax is a very economical car.

It is very easy to drive, the steering is light and very responsive.

The suspension is too soft, therefore the ride can be uncomfortable.

There is a lot of space in the cabin for such a small car.

It's mechanically very simple, and can be repaired at home easily.

Since the above repairs it has started every time, first time.

Acceleration is poor and this makes overtaking very difficult.

The four gears are good for town, but struggle on the motorway.

Torque at low speeds in second and fourth gear is very poor.

1988 Citroen AX 11 TRE 1.1 benzine from Slovenia

Summary:

Poison from the small bottle

Faults:

At 50000 km the electronics started acting a little naughty, but wasn't much of a problem actually.

The headlamps (left) died at about 60000 km.

The ventilator went off at 75000 km.

Everything is perfect otherwise.

General Comments:

The car is very light and it has good brakes.

Handling is great, however the suspension is much too soft.

If driven easily, it isn't hungry for more than about 5.5 liters per 100 kms, otherwise around 7.

The gearbox has only 4 speeds and that turns out to be a problem when driving at 150 km/h (it reaches 5000 RPM then) or when driving slow (20, 25 km/h) because of its low torque.

The best part is its engine. Small, but pulls this little car quite fast. I dared to race much stronger cars because of it!

The seats are much too soft and the steering wheel is too thin.

1988 Citroen AX 11 tre en vogue 1.1 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Unfortunately it's a bit girly

Faults:

It used to overheat at high speeds, this was down to a crook head gasket. Once replaced the car ran perfectly. This was at over 80000 miles. According to the service history, that was first head gasket problem. No other problems.

General Comments:

It's a bit small, but I am 6'2".

Great economic little runner.

Inside nice. Rquipped with electric windows and central locking to make life easier.

Very quick!!!
