1992 Citroen AX GT review from UK and Ireland
"A cheap and fun pocket rocket"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Clutch cable went.
Drivers caliper is sticking slightly.
General comments?
My car started life as a 1 litre. however I soon got bored with its frankly awful performance and carried out a proper engine and gearbox swap. The result is a very nippy little car. The fact it is so light means that it will beat bigger cars with much larger engines.
Standard styling was poor, however the GT can look quite nice, its nicely different from the average Saxo or Nova, and doesn't have a bad-boy reputation. Plus the car is a bit of a wolf in sheep's clothing, I have given many people a very nasty shock at the lights!
General build quality isn't too bad, so far the car has been reliable although the bodywork is very thin and the brakes are nothing special. The GT seats are quite comfortable, but the driving position is poor and the car is very noisy.
Handling is superb, even without modern luxuries such as power steering it is still very responsive and easy to control.
Special mention must go to the fuel economy, which even when driven hard is superb. Combine this with cheap parts and easy d.i.y maintenance, and you have a car that won't break the bank.
