2002 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6 i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Cheap build quality, but extremely chuckable

Faults:

Wildly fluctuating idle speed on rare occasion.

Wheel arch linings adrift on front wheels.

Compared to some reviews I have read not really anything to report (touch wood).

General Comments:

Absolutely eaten front tires (illegal after 11500 miles).

Harsh ride with lots of squeaks and rattles, seems to crash into potholes as opposed to ride over them.

Nasty interior with seats and gear lever gaiter wearing quickly.

Little room in the back when I have seat in comfortable position.

Worried about servicing after reading some reviews about terrible dealers.

Infinitely moddable.

Terrible brakes - little initial bite, not fantastic stopping power, do fade when worked hard, car unstable when braking from high speed.

Not too bad in a straight line although gear change is slow. Decent amount of torque for such a little motor.

Handles gloriously - decent levels of grip, very communicative, little body roll, throttle adjustable, slides beautifully, very involving and basically a right giggle.

2002 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good performance, but not much attention to detail

Faults:

The driver's door was not properly aligned from day 1! We've had it in 4 times for them to get it fixed and it is now OK, but I'm still convinced that there is more wind noise than there should be.

Vibration noise when sitting at fairly high revs - it is in getting fixed just now for this problem.

General Comments:

The car is great fun and holds the road so much better than previous cars I've driven.

Interior is OK, but this car is quite noisy.

Dealer service has been extremely poor and this would put me off Citroen in future.

2002 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good for young lads who want to have fun-driving, watch out for those bigger cars though!

Faults:

I have discovered a leak in the roof where the aerial is attached, it's not that bad the water comes straight through the comfort light, but it shouldn't happen at all.

Need to get that sorted as of yet!

Lots of rattling of upholstery, but I haven't had the time to diagnose it yet. One is definitely the sun roof cover, need to keep it totally closed to stop the noise.

General Comments:

Bought mine in November 2002 52 reg.

Average on power, holds the road better than any other car; back wheels glide on tough corners and just bounce round and straighten up without fail.

Unlike my written off Cavalier 2.2 Sri!!!

Cockpit very 1994 though which could do with more features.

Potential to trick it up, which is good for boy racers with a bit of money and not much life.

Looks good even as stock factory standard which is its best attribute from my point of view.

Overall its good price to pay for a good drive.

2002 Citroen Saxo VTS 1.6i 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fast, but it's just one fault after another!

Faults:

After about 2500 miles, a squeak developed with the fan belt, for about 10 minutes after starting the car. A visit to the main dealer told me that this was "normal"!

At 3000 miles, a rattle started in the alternator. The car went in to the main dealer's service depot and required a new alternator. I had to take the car in a fews days later to have this fitted (half a day)

The next day, after having the new alternator fitted, a new squeak began with the fan belt. I took the car back in (again) and they said that it would need a new fan belt (they had re-fitted the old one the previous day!). I had to return the car a few days later to have this fitted and it took over 4 hours to fit - I was told it would only take 45 minutes!

Now, at 4000 miles, a 'clunk' has started underneath the car. This clunk happens each time I set off from either a stand still or a rolling start and can be felt in the clutch pedal. I've left this until now (4700 miles), but it's still happening and so am taking the car in again. Having read some comments on here, it appears I may be told this is NORMAL! (Yeah right!)

A squeak comes and goes still on the fan belt, but I've given up caring now and just crank the stereo up!

General Comments:

I bought the car from new to have 'less problems with my car', but I've had less problems with my old J reg Peugeot 106!

There is a great deal of wind noise when driving on the motorway - even though all windows are shut.

Cabin rattles are developing and I've only had the car for 4.5 months.

The cars overall performance is great - pull up alongside someone at the lights, watch them think "Oh, it's just a crappy Saxo' and then leave them in your exhaust fumes!

Brakes - good

Handling - good

Looks - good

0-60 - excellent

Faults/service - difficult to say without swearing!

My '02 VTS also did the clunking noise underneath at about 4000miles, being a mechanic I had a look myself and found it to be a silly mounting plate a spring on the exhaust downpipe that fastens to the gearbox, two minutes with an angle grinder fixed it and at 22500miles I still love my 'quiet' motor;)

Thanks for the advice. Actually, after taking the car back in again, it was found to be the catalytic converter (AGAIN!!) The springs had gone (or so they said) and so they replaced it for me. Apart from the odd squeak from the fan belt, I've had no more troubles with the car (touch wood). It's a fantastic car to drive and everyone that I've taken out in it wants one too, it's just a shame Citroen are so bad on the service & parts quality.

Iv got a W plate Saxo VTR with 98,000 on the clock and I've also got a clunk sometimes when I set off with the wheel on half a lock (either way) and when I corner quick. Me and an mot tester had a look around checked the ball joints and driveshafts and everything is ok.

Hi everyone! After reading your comments, I'm totally wiped out!! Just bought a Saxo VTS a week ago, and noticed a clunking noise the day after I bought it! I took it back to the garage and they told me my spare wheel was loose!! They also said my exhaust was blowing!

I took the car back to get the exhaust fixed, and haven't heard the clunking noise since. But for some reason I just don't trust this car, and certainly not since I've read these comments! Please help, I've taken it out on finance; shall I keep it???
