1992 Citroen ZX Avantage 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Trustworthy and Economical

Faults:

Just tear and ware. Exhaust replaced at 60,000. Front tyres at 65,000, back tyres still original (and made it through MOT).

Biggest problem I had was with the Radiator, which needed to be replaced at 80,000 after minor reparations at 40,000.

Brakes pads I replaced every 20,000 miles for safety reasons, although they still had some miles in them.

Braking is definitely the weak point of this car.

Fan belt started to snap every 5,000 in the last two years, although nothing seems to be wrong with it.

A bit of rust started to appear at around 100,000.

General Comments:

Nice engine gives all you need in the city and on the motorway, providing you stick to speed limit.

Very economic and trustworthy car.

Handles very well, like all Citroen's. Sticks to the road in every situation.

Parts are quite cheap if you stay clear of the dealer.

Had it for 12 years and felt sad to let it go, but I needed a bigger car.

1992 Citroen ZX Avantage 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Extremely competent, underrated hatchback

Faults:

Faulty wiring causing engine to cut out randomly!

Went through CV joints like no tomorrow!

Remote central locking started failing-fixed with hammer and swearing!

That's all really.

General Comments:

It was a good all-rounder. The ride was fantastic, so smooth and yet such good handling. Interior space was excellent, it was very comfortable too.

Equipment was good, lots of electric goodies (most still worked!)

Quite brisk performance for small engine, but gearing was too tall-kept running out of breath and having to change down. Proof:it did 41mph in 1st gear, it did 72mph, in SECOND gear and so on! But the economy was quite good and parts were well priced.

It took age well, being very quiet on the move, and well sound-proofed too.

Brakes were a bit spongey I thought, but again it was nearly base-spec. I would consider buying another one, but I would choose a Volcane or 16V with even more go and better brakes and looks etc.

I've had six cars now in two years, a costly way to motor, but I like trying different cars. I enjoyed the ZX and it was the most trouble-free car I've owned really.

A bit on the shy side for me, but very underrated and well worth the money.

1992 Citroen ZX Volcane 2.0i from Netherlands

Summary:

High performance and beautiful car

Faults:

The accu/battery went bad.

General Comments:

I had two accidents (which were not mine, nor the car's fault). With the second accident it was total loss, which is really a shame, because it was a really great car.

Very powerful engine. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds and a top of 210 km/h.

I (being tall) had a little leg room.

The drivers seats were fully adjustable.

1992 Citroen ZX Advantage 1.9 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A very economical, quality car at an affordable price

Faults:

The only thing to go wrong is a badly balanced wheel on the of-side rear of the vehicle, I am yet to get this repaired.

General Comments:

I travel 40 to 60 miles per day in this car and can get 400 miles out of a tank, easily, and it only costs about £30-00 to fill up.

It has electric windows, sunroof and mirrors and power steering and remote central locking. More gadgets than you would expect to get in a car of this age and class.

The car looks almost brand new once washed.

Your review on the Citroen ZX Advantage 1.9D were 100% accurate, the car is unbelievably reliable, and superb on the economy, however I actually get 490 miles from a tank (average) and once I got 525 miles. I do fill the car up with patients i.e. allow the diesel froth to settle then fill up a bit more.

I love my ZX, I've had it since it was 2 years old, I bought it 5 years back and it sails through every MOT, never rusts, and always polished up beautifully as the car is polar white, so it comes up crisp & clean.

I've no intention what so ever in getting rod of it, so I'll keep it going with new magnetic oil every 6000 and slick 50 in the gearbox.
