1999 Ford Explorer Sport V6 from North America

Summary:

The crappiest thing on wheels

Faults:

The rear windshield wiper does not work AT ALL.

The ABS light is on and refuses to go out.

The undercarriage rattles so bad that it makes you want to drive it into something.

And last but not least, the transmission is almost completely gone, and has pretty much become undriveable.

General Comments:

The crappiest car I have ever owned, and WILL NEVER own another one again!

1999 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0 V6 from North America

Summary:

I still like my Explorer

Faults:

Both seat levers had broken off of the seats. Which make it impossible to get into the back of the truck.

The engine makes a rattling noise which seems to come from nowhere.

The gear shift indicator keeps breaking repeatedly.

Both front brake calipers hoses and rotors seized up at the same time.

Both front sway bar links broke at the same time.

The truck recently has a new problem, when driving down the highway the truck seems to stall and catch itself, There is no certain time or speed that it does this. There is no check engine light on and I do not know what is causing this is, but I'm sure it is not good.

General Comments:

The truck is is wonderful shape bodywise, I take wonderful care of it being a mechanic myself.

Overall I have little complaints about the truck.

The 4x4 works like a charm, and I can go practically anywhere with my 35x12.50x15 mud tires.

The truck was a little tipsy around corners when it was stock height kinda like a marshmallow on wheels.

Who expects their seat levers to break off in their hands kinda chinsy and cheap if you ask me.

Overall the vehicle has been somewhat of a let down, just because of all the little things that go wrong with it.

My gas mileage is horrible even with a full KnN INTAKE KIT and full exhaust system.

1999 Ford Explorer Sport from North America

Faults:

I have a 99 Ford Explorer Sport. I loved it at first because I wanted a change from my previous car, a Toyota Corolla (which was an excellent car - no problems for 10 years until someone totaled it). Now the Explorer rode smooth for a truck and the pick-up was great, but then little things started to happen immediately after purchase. Back windshield wiper not working. The handle on the back of the passenger seat to adjust level, broke off. My rear door suddenly stopped opening. No, my mistake. It will open when it feels like opening. Then the driver side door lock or handle will not work unless I jiggle-pull jiggle-pull jiggle-pull about twenty times. Not what I expected. This is actually my second Ford, which my gut instinct told me not to get another one due to my mustang just up and dying one day.

1999 Ford Explorer XLT 4.litre from North America

Summary:

It's a great all-round SUV

Faults:

Needed a new belt tensioner at 72000 miles.

General Comments:

Truck has been a joy, great in snow, not great on gas, but overall a true american work horse.

1999 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 OHV from North America

Summary:

Beats Chevy Blazer in all categories

Faults:

Rear wheel speed sensor 90,000 caused ABS light. $25.

Transfer case speed sensor 110,000 $110 (mostly diagnostic time)

Lower Ball Joints 120,000 $250.

Replaced all 4 shocks at 125,000 not really bad for the miles on them, I just replaced them as a preventative measure.

General Comments:

I bought this when I traded in my 98 blazer. If I had driven an explorer before I don't think I would have ever even considered a blazer.

Handling is excellent for an SUV, rack and pinion steering is very responsive and precise. It could ride a bit smoother, but the suspension is still pretty good.

I am very happy with my explorer and definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone who may be looking into purchasing one. Gas mileage isn't too bad, I get about 19 mpg, compared to my 98 blazer which got about 12.8 mpg.

I love the full time "AUTO" 4X4 system. I never have to worry about the constant changing winter road conditions in PA.

This vehicle has restored my faith in Ford.

As per your comment about the shock absorbers, shocks are meant to be replaced every 100,000 KM's (roughly 60,000 miles), and if you want a better ride, try Monroe Sensa-trac shocks or even pay a little more for a Bilstein shock. I own a 97 Explorer Sport. Hated the ride, love the truck. Replaced the factory shocks with Monroe Sensa-trac and have never looked back. Even the handling improved, as well as braking distance improved.

Before I bought the Explorer, I wasn't much a fan of the blue oval, but now I will take it over the bow tie or horns any day!
