1997 Ford F150 XLT 4.6L V8 from North America

Summary:

I will buy another F-150 when it's time

Faults:

Electrical problem at 150,000 miles, and had to replace the universal joint, and upper and lower control arms, at 188,000 miles.

General Comments:

This is one fine American made vehicle. I can't justify getting rid of it because it runs so good after all these years.

It's by no means as good as the newer and more modern trucks, but owning this truck has made me a Ford man through and through.

I will definitely buy another Ford truck, given a chance.

1997 Ford F150 Lariat, 2wd 4.6 V8 from North America

Summary:

Top of the line truck

Faults:

Bad harmonic balancer. Easy fix by my local mechanic.

Rear brake-line rusted through. Also fixed by my local mechanic.

Bad rotors at 120000. Will replace soon, I just ran the brake pads too long without checking.

I had to put a new radio in it, the old one went bad.

General Comments:

This truck rides like a caddy. I will get all I can out of this truck. It is only a RWD, which is a downfall, but I have another 4x4 for harder work.

Fast truck; I can beat a lot of things out there. It's no racer, but it can get up and go.

I really do like this truck, and my dad only paid 1000 for it.

1997 Ford F150 Flare Side 4.6 from North America

Summary:

I will buy another Ford pickup, no questions asked

Faults:

One alternator at 225,000 miles.

Front brakes and rotors 2 times.

General Comments:

Best truck I have ever had. Does not leak oil, and the A/C has never been charged in 12 years; still freeze you out.

I never changed the transmission filter, does not slip, still works great, still is as tight as the first day I bought it.

1997 Ford F150 Supercab 406 from North America

Summary:

Can't beat a Ford truck, now or ever

Faults:

A few rust problems, but it is 13 years old after all.

General Comments:

Great old truck, can't kill the motor. Still runs like new.

Had a few mechanical problems, but with 265,000 on her, that is expected. I had a 250 reg cab that gave me 375,000 on the 4.6, and it is still running. It's a donor for this one.

1997 Ford F150 XLT Super Cab 4.2L V6 from North America

Summary:

Ford Trucks -- Built to Break!

Faults:

Replaced engine at 74,000 miles with a rebuilt one from Ford.

Blew second engine at 147,000 miles.

Replaced rear brake sensor.

Replaced front end steering linkage.

Replaced front brake rotors.

Replaced shocks.

General Comments:

Overall the truck has served its purpose of transporting kids, my painting tools, and camping equipment. However, there is this small thing about the engine blowing up... twice! And before you accuse me of not changing the oil -- forget it -- ALWAYS between 3,000-5,000 miles. Kept up on other maintenance too. And again, I have NEVER hauled anything with it.

Face it, the 4.2L V-6 engine is a piece of crap, so apparently agrees Ford who would only agree to warranty the rebuild for a meager 40,000 miles -- as much as a pair of tires. Amazingly it lasted 75,000. There is no way I will spend $4000+ to put another one in, though. I am tired of my kids complaining about how uncomfortable the rear bench seat is, and tired of how underpowered and under braked it is. Instead, I'll use the money as a down payment on a Toyota, the best truck I have ever owed.

1997 Ford F150 XL 4.2 from North America

Summary:

Good truck overall

Faults:

The timing cover on the 4.2 liter engine was a cheap design. It started leaking and caused problems. Ford motor co. had a 1 week recall on this, which we all missed because they stopped it. I think they owe all of us guy's who purchased the 4.2 liter engine another engine.

I don't have the truck anymore, but I fixed the problem at home. I should have put my old FE big block in there like my Daddy told me to, but I liked the mileage of the 6.

I still purchase Ford Products, because they are the best overall. I would not be caught dead in a Chevy or Dodge.

I would accept a used 1997 F150 short box in saddle color with a 390ci fuel injected if Ford will give it to me. Also please install a 5 speed trans.

General Comments:

Best looking truck on the road.
