1996 Ford Mondeo GLX 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An absolutely fantastic machine

Faults:

Central locking doesn't work.

Boot is difficult to shut (have to really slam it!)

Driver's door doesn't make contact with the light (door shut) switch.

I think there's something wrong with the catalytic converter.

I think I require new brake pads.

I had a leak on the passenger-side foot-well. When I inspected it, it was due to someone cross-threading the nuts on the pollen filter chamber. I fixed it by spacing the nut with rubber washers.

General Comments:

I've modified my car slightly, but I've always been impressed with it's performance.

1996 Ford Mondeo LX 1.7TD from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Not the bargain it might appear

Faults:

Cam belt snapped at 45,000 miles, after a recent service and handbook stating 60,000 replacement. Appalling local dealer service, sympathetic Ford support. Complete engine rebuild cost £2,000.

Probably as a consequence of the above there have been many minor issues - leaking radiator hoses, fuel blockages, overheating.

A lot of tire wear. All 4 tires regularly swapped and all replaced at least twice.

Front bushes went at 50,000.

General Comments:

Takes a lot of school taxi traffic and stop/start daily commutes without protest.

All the minor gear (switches, windows etc.) works very well and feels very solid.

Seats are hard wearing and comfortable.

1996 Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.0 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fantastic, buy one!

Faults:

ABS went a bit mental and only worked intermittently. Turned out to be faulty sensor.

Air-con needs a new condenser.

Drivers side elements on heated windscreen not working.

General Comments:

I have only had this car a few months, but I am very impressed with pretty much every aspect of this car.

It is a very fast car (140, on a private road of course!!!).

I love this car! It's got every toy you could need (and some you don't), it's incredibly comfortable, roomy, reasonably economical if driven sedately, and it's just really easy to drive.

Torque steer can be a problem when driving enthusiastically, as can a touch of lift-off over-steer.

The car doesn't handle badly, but could do with less body roll. Am going to cure this with lower, stiffer springs.

I paid £1600 for this car with 116,000 miles on the clock. it was in near perfect condition and had been well looked after.

As a second-hand buy, I couldn't fault it.

1996 Ford Mondeo LX 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A nice looking car, but costly on repairs

Faults:

The car has an intermittent fault. It will lose power and stall. When you turn it off and back on again it will clear itself. This has now got to the stage where it will die after a few minutes and won't even re fire for a while after now.

The passenger foot well fills up with water in heavy rain. (good for a portable fish tank)

The windows all fog up and won't clear. (you end up driving like Ace Ventura with your head out the window)

General Comments:

Apart from that lot it's a good motor.

Sounds like your head gaskets gone.

Are you losing coolant?

1996 Ford Mondeo 16v Zetec 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A good car for hearing impaired 'Sunday drivers'

Faults:

The steering pulls to the right when braking.

This car 'Clunks' and groans when full-lock is applied to the steering.

Acceleration is sluggish and jerky.

Alarm goes off for no apparent reason.

General Comments:

Too much plastic!

If you like the sound of creaking and rattling then this car is for you.

This car handles like an overweight rhinoceros with an aversion to speed!

However, there is plenty of legroom and acres of space in the boot.

Obviously does not no the real mondeo! must have bought a cat d write off by the sounds of it. My p reg 1.8 zetec is lively and a very reliable solid car.

You can't say anything bad about it if your previous car was a nova!

If you force the steering against full lock you put a heck of a load on the power steering pump (the groaning noise) and the steering bushes (the clunking).

This is why the instruction book tells you not to do it!
