1993 Ford Probe GT 2.5 from North America

Summary:

My '93 Ford Probe GT has been a dream for me.

Faults:

I have replaced the water pump, alternator, distributor cap and wires, front axle, muffler, and front struts. All repairs were done because of normal wear and tear.

The engine has a very small oil leak, the parking brake has always been useless, as have been the hydraulic arms that hold the hatch and the paint is heavily oxidized.

When I bought the car new the engine had a loud knocking sound in the cold weather that eventually went away. The Ford dealer mechanics were clueless about this problem.

General Comments:

The car is not the fastest sports car in the world, but to this day its smooth acceleration and cornering are very impressive.

I see no reason for getting a new car because the engine, body, and transmission are in great shape.

Repairs on the car are fairly expensive.

As far as the engine sound. It sounds like a "clacking" at cold start up and eventually goes away. It has been that way since day one. Tests from the manufacturer have showed that it is not a damaging source. It sounds like lifters clacking, but no harm is done. Should have no worries. Nearly every Probe GT will make the same sound.

I disagree with the above comment the lifter problem with the crackling noise is the head gasket craking, all 93 to 94 probe's had that problem. But I still like the probe it's a nice car.

1993 Ford Probe GT 6.5 from North America

Summary:

Reliable transportation

Faults:

Was eating up front tires. After new tie rods and a brake job, it's fine.

Lost the idler tension pulley - just fell off. Luckily I was only about 3 miles from home coming off a 700 mile trip. Found one at a junkyard for $18.00 - end of issue.

Clutch recently went. Will need to replace.

General Comments:

Not overly comfortable for long road trips, as my legs are too long. But handles well and gets great mileage.

1993 Ford Probe GT 2.5 V6 from North America

Summary:

It is a sporty, quick, affordable car

Faults:

I had to replace the water pump, timing belt, and install a new radiator that cost me $700.

Recently I also had to replace the rear calipers and install new brake pads.

General Comments:

The car is really fast and a lot of fun to drive.

It handles very well around turns at high speeds and has a lot of power to get up and go.

The overall appearance of the car is very streamline and sleek.

The interior is extremely comfortable especially if equipped with bolster and lumbar drivers seat.

The trunk has got a lot of room for hauling cargo or other various items.

The back seats are just as comfy as the front seats.

1993 Ford Probe GT 2.5L DOHC V6 from North America

Summary:

A sports car without the sporty price tag

Faults:

Replaced oxygen sensors at 68,000 miles.

Replaced Ball Joints costs $600.

To replace timing belt - parts and labor costs $340.

Paint job is wearing out badly, considering a repaint.

Hatch doesn't hold - I use a stick to hold it if I have to use.

Passenger side Door Panel came loose at 68500 miles - not fixed yet - doesn't bother me (the driver :) )

Replaced front tires - $112 each - still need to replace back tires - financially dangerous!!!

General Comments:

I drove this car to DC from Buffalo, NY and not a hitch - average speed was 100mph on trip.

Can accelerates from 0 - 70mph in 6 seconds. I look on Mustangs with pity as I leave them in the dust. A guy is a Mustang gave me the middle finger after I passed him and he couldn't catch up. ha ha!!

Best car I have owned - Wonder if I'll give it up except I will get a Corvette or a newer performance car.

Good car for those with some mechanical ability - expensive to fix and replace parts.

It does handle corners like it should.

I need to replace the wheel bearing soon - about $400.
