1998 Ford Ranger LT 1.6 from Ecuador

Summary:

Very dangerous, unreliable

Faults:

Back tire (Firestone) exploded with no reason, on a very good road, at 80 km/h. Dealer said it only happens in Explorers, and thus refused to pay for the replacement.

Required new tires (Goodyear) after just 20000 kilometers.

Sounds ugly when turning. Dealer says it is normal.

General Comments:

The overall design is really bad. The truck is too heavy in the front and too light in the back. When unloaded, it is so unstable that you can't go over 100 km/h. When loaded, it gets pushed down, and the tires touch the chassis all the time.

There are no door locks. A child may open the door by just pulling the handles. It is really dangerous.

Designers have spent lots of time on insignificant details (ten-position wipe control, three-part jack lever, etc.) instead of paying enough attention to convenience and safety.

The bad sound you heard is the power steering unit, seems all Ford products have a whine to them. The unit is strong and reliable, just noisy. How much of a load do you put into truck? I routinely put in 2 motorcycles weighing well over 700lbs. and have never had a problem with the tires rubbing the fenders, I even went to larger rims and tires. Hope this is of help.

1998 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0 V-6 from North America

Summary:

Good all around

Faults:

Starter went out once, got it replaced, and a week later it went out again, but it's fixed now.

The suspension was trashed and the frame was bent, but that's not Ford's fault. I'm a teenager and I off-roaded to the extreme.

The CD player wouldn't play half of my CD's.

The clutch squeaks, but it is a minor problem.

General Comments:

It's pretty reliable if you don't let a teenager like myself get a hold of it.

I've railed the engine so many times and still haven't had any trouble with it at all (the engine that is).

Nice looking for the price, and the 3.0 V-6 is pretty quick off the line.

1998 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0 V6 from North America

Summary:

A great truck with not so great seating

Faults:

Interior light switch went bad.

Passenger side air bag switch went bad.

Ball joint on the driver's side went bad at 32,000 miles.

All problems covered under the warranty.

General Comments:

Overall the Ranger is a fine truck. The seats, however, are horrendously uncomfortable. There is little, if any, lumbar support.

1998 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 3.0 V6 from North America

Summary:

Excellent vehicle

Faults:

Replaced the throttle position sensor at 30,000 miles (warranty covered it).

Replaced door ajar sensors after 3 years/62,000 miles ($16 each).

General Comments:

Engine: 3.0 V6 has comfortable power and torque. Wish it didn't prefer mid-grade fuel (I would appreciate comments if anyone has a suggestion). Always had a drop in oil level between changes (dealer claims it's normal) However, emissions tests are excellent and never found a drop on the pavement.

4X4: Vacuum hublocks. They are wonderful.

Manual transmission: Feels the same as it did when brand new. It's great.

Cost to drive: I wish fuel economy was better (getting 16 city/ 19 highwy). But the cost to drive is still cheap because only basic maintenance is required and that's pretty inexpensive.

Interior: durable and very nice for a truck. Road noise is minimal.

Handling: I'm impressed. Very stable with good cornering.

Resale value: as a percentage of initial cost, it appears to be excellent.

Summary:

A solid, comfortable little truck

Faults:

Nothing at all.

General Comments:

This is just a super reliable, comfortable, good looking truck. Good on gas mileage and handles really well. I just love how it drives; really solid. I've had no problems, large or minor, with it at all.

1998 Ford Ranger LXT V-6 from North America

Faults:

The dealer where purchased gets a rating of -5. They thought they knew everything but could not even register it properly.

General Comments:

Second ranger. The first died in a head on collision with a Mustang. The Ranger came out best but was totaled. It saved two lives.
