1992 Ford Sierra GT 2.0 DOHC from Portugal

Very good

Nothing has ever gone wrong with this car except the water temperature gauge and even that, very recently.

General Comments:

My father bought this car in 1992 and I own it since 2001. The car is robust and reliable. All You need is to give it petrol and change motor oil, filtres and tyres from time to time.

Very low petrol consumption (7/8 litres per 100 km on the road, 10 to 15 in town) for it's engine due to a very long gearbox. A good choice if You live in the country. Less good if You live in a city centre.

Performance is not excellent due the the same reason as the low petrol consumption: Long gearbox ratios. Very fun to drive, that rear traction although loveable can be a bit tricky if You are a woman. You ether love it or You don't.

This car is at its best on a freeway.

Fantastic car!

Thermostat - common failure.

Radiator / water pump, due too bad post crash repair.

Front TCA bushes and front suspension bushes, but since uprating to polybushes, no complains. (highly recommended!)

Core plug blew on 2nd hand engine, but was replaced. (think water pump prob as well)

Exhaust, non stainless, was changed to mongoose - 100% better :) (nice noise)

Fusebox can cause probs, if lid not closed properly.

Read diff failed, was rebuilt, and has been great ever since!

Gear selector plastic thingy broke, whilst in outside lane!, fixed and fine ever since.

General Comments:

Great car, cheap and easy to repair, modify, fun to drive, very responsive!

Only problem came when I lowered the whole car, then wanted to add a stainless exhaust. As it fouled when going over speed humps, so raised the rear suspension with uprated springs, and has been fine ever since.

The main problem was, as is fairly common, the DOHC engine, I've had 3 in the same car, but since the crash it's not been the same : (

The car is now off the road, waiting for extensive repair, or stripping for parts, but have had several sierras before, including a 1.8 saff, 2.0 xr4xr (not bad), a 2.9xr4x4 1990 (nice and quick ;-) and a 1.6 for spares.

The interior is a dream to work on, Haynes manuals are very informative and easy to follow, as are the wiring diagrams (added several extras that weren't standard on the GT).

Possibly the only complaint with the car, it wasn't fast enough!

Shame it's not made anymore.

Parts are still available, but, and I stress this, Ford won't keep making them forever, as I've found out a few times.

Funny bit - in the past, I used to pass the next reg up, exactly the same car, model and colour, on my way to work. We always used to flash each other!!

I wish they still made this car!

Head gasket blew about 1yr after I got the car. Seems to be OK after I fitted a genuine Ford gasket (don't fit a motor factors one)

Alternator died.

Rear outer mounts rusted through on front seats (in 04).

Rear Shocks replaced.

Crank sensor died.

General Comments:

Even though I have a cat model it had very good fuel economy, about 34MPG with urban & 'A' road driving.

Performance was very good too with plenty of low speed torque allowing it to pull 5th gear from as low as 45mph! (1300 RPM).Runs out of power over 5500 RPM, but otherwise is quick.

Very well equipped car even by modern standards. It has air con, PAS, ABS, all e/win, front & rear heated screens, e/sunroof.All round disc brakes.

Love the rear wheel drive, far better grip in the wet & dry than FWD, though not in snow!

Only reason it's going is because it has been rear ended & is a write off : (
