1995 Ford Windstar LX 3.8L V6 from North America

Summary:

A great family vehicle with outstanding performance

Faults:

The Usual problematic interior lights and door contacts.

Water pump failed, the second was installed incorrectly by the service department, this caused problems with the serpentine belt.

Idler pulley installed backwards, causing another problem with the serpentine belt.

General Comments:

This van has always been comfortable and my opinion is that the van does not owe me a cent. It went 380 thousand before a major problem occurred with the heads causing me to sell.

All other items such as suspension maintenance issues were because of high mileage.

The mileage is a testament to its reliability.

1995 Ford Windstar LX 3.8 V6 from North America

Summary:

I Miss It Dearly

Faults:

The head gasket was replaced under warranty in 1997.

O2 sensors three times--dome light and door chime would not turn off until after 10 minutes.

Check engine light came on sporadically as well.

Starter made a metal grinding noise on the first turn of key. Started right up the second time--100K plus.

The armrest broke after awhile. It was just very old.

General Comments:

I really miss the old minivan. It really was a very reliable van.

It had a rare digital display which I thought was very neat.

The seats were large and comfortable.

It got very good fuel economy for a minivan.

The Town and Country that my family current has does not even come close to the Windstar. I cried when it was sold in 2004.

1995 Ford Windstar LX 3.8 V6 from North America

Summary:

Barely sufficient

Faults:

Normal things like struts and brakes, however the worst problems I have is the constant ringing of the bell for the door ajar and the inability of the interior lights to turn off after turning the car off.

I have a workaround for the light problem - simply remove the fuse and install a switch with one wire to each side of the fuse holder. Then at least you can turn off the interior lights.

My biggest gripe is the darn chime for the door ajar that simply will not quit until you get above 20 mph.

Does anyone know how to fix this one?

General Comments:

Comfortable to ride in, but very noisy on the highway. Transmission mishifts occasionally.

Air conditioner is great - much colder than my 99 Grand Prix.

I don't think I will buy another Ford after the problems we ahve had with this one.

1995 Ford Windstar GL 3.8 V6 from North America

Summary:

Good van

Faults:

Brake calipers @ 180,000.

General Comments:

This car has been totally dependable to me.

The previous owner had the transmission rebuild at ca. 160,000.

Good mileage. I average 28mpg. Always starts at once. No corrosion, interior still in good condition, seats still comfortable.

Only right ventilation window does not open and sometimes the speedometer becomes somewhat unstable over 60mph.

Comfortable and rather practical car. Does not even corner that bad.

I do miss adjustable headrests in the front and in the back headrests are totally absent unfortunately.

Also comfortable on a long journey. I went with it from Virginia to Florida on a round trip recently (5,000 miles in 12 days, four people on board) and from Virginia to Massachusetts (750 miles, used as moving van) in one day.

I only spend $200.- on maintenance and repairs in 10,000 miles.

This is the best car I owned so far. That includes a 4 year old Suzuki and a 4 year old Volkswagen.

Keep an eye on this van's two known weaknesses, your tranny and headgasket. Don't "rally" it (drive the van real hard, that is), and it should last you awhile. Most people who have problems with their Windstar is either from lack of maintenance, the way they drive it, or both.
