2002 Jaguar X-Type review from North America

"A well designed new jaguar model with serious growing pains."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Dealer attempted to fix a rattle four times until it was finally found that the catalytic converter had not been welded to the tail pipe at the factory. Each attempt required the dealer to order parts from england, so my car was in and out of the shop 8 times in the first year.

One year and one month after getting the car the transmission failed and needed to be replaced.

The first few months I owned the car there seemed to be a gremlin in the electrical system. The door locks would not work for a day, then they would start working again. The moon roof did the same thing.

The trunk latch had problems. This is a well known problem for this car.

General comments?

The dealer attempted to fix a rattle four times until it was finally found that the catalytic converter had not been welded to the tail pipe at the factory.

The X-Type is a very well designed car. When running correctly this is a great car. The exterior is stunning. The interior is affixed with almost every amenity. The navigation system is the best I have seen. The leather seats and wood dash are luxurious. The four wheel drive is great!.

On the other hand, the engine could definitely use some more power and the transmission was hesitant and quirky.

This is the X-Type at its best. Unfortunately the car does not always live up to its design. The problems I had are listed in detail in the section above.

I must say that my dealer, Howard Orloff in Chicago, was very good about the whole thing. They always kept me informed, never charged me a penny and always provided me with a loaner car. The loaner was usually a rental car unless my car was going to be in for an extended period, in which case they gave me demo Jaguar to drive. Even with such nice treatment when the transmission failed I had taken all I could. I requested that Jaguar corporate look at my service record and consider buying the car back or loose a customer.

Jaguar really stood by its product!! Not only did they buy the car back for nearly what I paid for the car, minus a small amount for wear and tear, they also sold me a new car for cost!
