1989 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 4.0 L straight 6 cylinder from North America

Summary:

It's a powerhouse that won't stop

Faults:

The alternator went at 134000 miles.

The U-Joints needed to be fixed at 130000 miles.

The brakes needed to be fixed a couple times, but that's usual.

Other than that nothing has really happened.

The hydraulics for the back door just went a couple days ago.

There is a little bit of rust on both sides of the to front doors.

General Comments:

I have only had this car for about 1 year as of now. This Jeep is old but it still does what you want it to do. I have taken it off road and do some stuff that you really shouldn't do with vehicles and it still keeps going.

The car is a pretty comfortable car, the seats are still good with no holes or damage.

Most of the things you mentioned that went at a certain number of miles, on mine didn't go until 177000 miles on mine.

1989 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 litre 6 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A very solid car

Faults:

My head gasket, all oil seals and all frost plugs gone at 226000.

Radiator was recored @ 228000 and at the same time the housing for the thermostat had to be replaced.

Replaced the PCV valve @ 202000.

Replaced U-joints.

Replaced the water pump @ 188000.

Replaced the coolant bottle @ 227000.

Brakes replaced @ 192000.

Some electrical problems with fuses being blown.

General Comments:

This is as much as I can remember for now. But essentially the work that I have had done was to the original factory parts.

I can hear increased noise in one of the lifters and I know that is the next job to done. I have to say that for the most part I have enjoyed this Jeep. Her motor is wicked! She has great power.

Tip to all Jeep and car owners, frequently changing the oil will prolong the life of your motor. I am changing mine once a week! Happy motoring!

1989 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 4.0 liter 6 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A low performance workhorse that usually gets where it needs to go

Faults:

The alternator went @ 140,000 miles.

The starter died @ 165,000 miles.

Assorted seals and gaskets went at different mileages.

The rear windshield wiper motor went bad @ 117,000 miles.

The electrical system has had many small problems.

General Comments:

This is a big, loud, ugly beast.

It is not the most comfortable vehicle on the planet.

It is quite slow.

It is easy to work on.

It does pretty darn well once it has left the concrete and headed for dirt, mud or grass.

This is the only Jeep product I have ever seen with almost 200,000 miles on it.

My Jeep is rocking a proud 245,000 miles and my Uncle's Jeep is going strong with 265,000. I have an '89 and he an '88. Love it.

1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0 inline six from North America

Summary:

One of the best all around vehicles I have ever owned

Faults:

At a hundred thousand miles I had to replace the transmission.

Have gone through two radiators and had it in many radiator shops. Still wants to overheat on me, but it is under control now.

Had to machine and rebuild the head twice now. Warped from getting too hot.

Many other small things like, water pump, oil pump, rear main, alternator, fuel injectors, etc.

General Comments:

I seriously love my Jeep. It is the quickest vehicle I have ever owned. Love the 4.0. Before I put a five inch lift on, it handled great. Now it still does well but leans more in the turns.

The paint is still perfect. The inside has nothing to complain about besides the lack of a good cup holder and that joke they like to call a parking brake.

In the off road aspect, the Jeep Cherokee is without a doubt the best I have ever used. I do circles around all my friends. With only around $1500 put in to the suspension I can ramp 1200 RTI on a 20 degree ramp and a 690 RTI on a 30 degree ramp. I love it.
