2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee from North America

Summary:

It needs to be recalled for brakes

Faults:

The brakes are defective. Chrysler has done nothing to correct this severe problem. The rotors warp under heat, and have to be cut every few thousand miles. The car shakes when braking at 55 mph or more when this happens.

I have had to replace the water pump, coolant relay switch twice, and have had difficulty starting the car due to fuel injection issues. The car leaks anti freeze. At 30,000 miles the battery died. My heated seats do not work and the front speakers are blown out.

I was lied to by the dealership and told I needed new brake pads, when in fact it was the rotors that were warped! This is the worst car purchase I have ever made.

General Comments:

This car is a headache.

Although I have never owned a Grand Cherokee my best friend has had several. A 1993, 1994, 1996, 1999 and 2,000 model. All of the previous models he bought new. All have had severe problems with premature warping of the rotors due to heat generated in hard braking. This resulted in excessive vibration when braking at speeds above 40 mph. The newer Jeep models have corrected this problem with larger more heat resistant rotors installed on new Jeep Grand Cherokee models. My friend recently bought a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and has had no braking problems at all.

I have had SO MANY problems with my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I bought it used and 20 minutes after leaving the dealership the check engine soon light came on. Two months and $4000.00 dollars later I a new cylanoid (?), transmission, and water pump. Just today my daughter and I went to get ice cream and all of sudden smoke started pouring out of the hood, the cap on the radiator shot off (yes under the hood) and every single drop of anti freeze poured out from under the jeep. And idea what happened? I am a single mom and I do a good job getting the gas in.

When you buy a used vehicle, be prepared to spend some money on repairs. You said smoke poured out from under the hood. If it was white, that is just steam from boiled coolant, not smoke. The cap was obviously loose & when it came off it released the pressure normally in the cooling system when at operating temperature. Once the pressure is released, all of the coolant boils (turns to steam). No harm done if no one was injured. Make sure the cap is in good condition (or replace it with a new one) and refill the system. The car should be fine to drive. Start a good preventive maintenance program. At least once a month check oil level, coolant level (when engine is cold, power steering & brake fluid levels & tire pressures (including spare). Find a "mechanical friend" to help or go to the local high school that has automotive tech class... they will be more than happy to help. Any car is only as good as the maintenance it receives. Good luck.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited from North America

Summary:

8 out of 10

Faults:

Front brake Job at 50,000.

Both front power window motors replaced.

Both dash tweeters blown.

Very high idle at start-up...repair did not fix.

Tends to down shift very rough at low speeds.

Auto climate control does not work... heater blows cold air on passenger side.

General Comments:

I really love the vehicle. It has great acceleration and once the engine is warm it runs very well. The gas mileage is poor, but what do you expect from a V-8 SUV.

I have had many of the problems that are common on here and was fortunate enough to have bought an extended warranty that covered most of the repairs. If I did not have the extended warranty, I would not be nearly as satisfied with the vehicle. Overall, I have to say that I have had no more problems with it than I did my last Nissan and I enjoy driving it much more.
