1999 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4.0 from North America

Summary:

Love it!

Faults:

It needs a steering gear replaced, typical stuff like shocks and struts and it also needs a/c work. Otherwise just typical wear and tear.

General Comments:

The only thing that really vexes me is the hvac system. The controls seems to work how and when they want. Right now I can get the vents to blow only if it is on high. In the past it has changed from defrost to floor or floor to dash vents on its own. Any ideas? Also, anyone in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that knows a cheap (but good) mechanic to get some repairs done?

1999 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Edition 4.0 liter inline 6 from North America

Summary:

Buy something else, or a different model year

Faults:

Interior plastic has cracked on the dash and door panels, with little exposure to the sun; garage kept.

The seats stain easily, and have worn down easily.

I had electrical and transmission problems within the first year of ownership. One was a recall problem with part out of pocket cost to me, and the other was a $500-600 dollar expense.

Also suspension problems; part of the suspension "snapped" while driving in the city, not off-road, and I had to have it replaced at $300 cost to me.

General Comments:

When this car functions... it is fun to drive and you get a lot of looks from jealous motorists.

Fuel economy is atrocious. Don't know why they can't make these more fuel economical.

1999 Jeep Wrangler YJ 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Love my Wrangler, third one and counting!

Faults:

Every once in a while, the dashboard gauges, (the tach and speedometer) will fall to zero. I slap the dashboard to immediatly correct this issue.

General Comments:

This is my third Wrangler and I absolutely love it. I have had very few problems with any of my Wranglers. Clearly the newer models, 97 and up, ride much better than the older ones. This is a comfortable vehicle and the most reliable car I've ever had. I have never been stranded by a Jeep.

Keep in mind, this is not a vehicle to be driven at speeds over 65 miles per hour. Its not a sports car people.

My friends seem to think it it somewhat loud and rides a bit rough. I don't notice that.

I love being able to change the look of my car whenever I feel like it! Sometimes it's a "doors off" day. Other time its "top down". How could you not love that?

I do wish they would make an automatic convertible top though!

Heater like a flame thrower in the winter!

Your Wrangler is NOT a YJ, it is a TJ.

The last year of the YJ was the 1995 model.

It was replaced in 1996 with the TJ which was introduced as a 1997 model.

(There were no 1996 model year Wranglers)

The YJ's had leaf springs and the old style dash.

The TJ's dash looks more like a traditional Chrysler dash.

1999 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4.0 from North America

Summary:

Attitude and reliability = JEEP

Faults:

Comfort is good for Jeep standards. Not a high priority for most Jeep owners. If you want comfort, shop for an Audi.

Typical replacements for windshield.

Front wheel bearing replaced at 120,000 miles.

Radiator out at 105,000 miles.

As for cosmetics, the paint has chipped off both outside mirrors. I have seen this on other jeeps also and appears to be defect on the 1999 models.

General Comments:

2nd Jeep Wrangler I have owned. First was a 91 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L which had 170,000 miles when it was sold.

It's just something about a jeep that makes driving fun. Yes, it's loud and you are going to feel the bumps in the road. But that's the ruggedness of a jeep. (Hence, the "it's a jeep thing" logo)

I have owned Ford, Chevys, Plymouth and Pontiac. I still feel the in-line six, 4.0 L is the best American engine made. By the way, that old 91 Jeep I sold at 170,000 miles, I just saw it on the road with it's new owner 5 years after I sold it.

Take care of maintenance and this engine will treat you well.
