Engine needs to be replaced at 62000 miles and cannot be rebuilt due to nature of the engine material. Engine problems appear to stem from manufacturing origins.
Beware of engine noise and get it in to a GM dealer asap before you develop major problems on the road.
Put a 3.8 in it if you can.
I leased a 2002 Intrigue brand new and I have been driving it for four years now, just ready to turn it back to GM after logging 80,000kms. Overall the car has proved to be very reliable and comfortable and as others have mentioned, the 3.5litre 'short star' engine is smooth, well balanced and a super performer. I had some reoccurring incidents of the engine light failing to turn-off and was advised to make sure the gas cap was adequately turned tight, however, it also reappeared at times for other reasons which prompted me to get some further maintenance at a cost to me following warranty run-out. I wish GM wouldn't scare people to the dealership with such trivial things as this. I would buy this vehicle out following the lease, but, a tree branch fell on the front hood causing a slight dent and when I went to have it repaired, to my surprise, the body shop discovered that the front hood was a replacement and upon calibrating the paint thickness on the hood, the roof and the back truck lid, they found that it exceeded factory standards of between 10 and 14 millimetres which makes me suspicious that these areas were repainted prior to me receiving the vehicle even though I took it on with the odometer reading only 22kms.
Other than this, I truly like the car and I wish GM continued the Oldsmobile Intrigue line in their model offerings.
I did love my 2002 Olds Intrigue. But, at 70,000 kms after regular maintenace and loving-care...the engine is gone.
