1997 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.1L V6 from North America

Summary:

Great economical and dependable automobile

Faults:

Dash Lights went out.

Rattle in passenger door.

Catalytic Converter.

General Comments:

I bought this car from the original owner who assured me they have had no problems. I drive over 200 miles a day as a courier and really love the gas mileage and comfort.

The only problems I have had are normal wear and tear for a car this age.

Both myself and the original owner are middle aged people who do not hot rod or abuse the car.

Other comments that list several faults are usually from people that drive the vehicles hard and fast. These cars were not made to race or to abuse.

I feel that if you take proper care of these cars, and maintain them well that they could last for quite some time. I have no problems what so ever.

The previous owner maintained the car per manufacture recommendations and the dealer did most of the repairs.

I have always used the dealer for any maintenance and repairs to my vehicle, and adhere to all manufacture recommendations for maintenance.

I feel that if you drive a car carefully and maintain a vehicle like it should be maintained, then you will get the miles out of them that you should.

I will certainly buy another of these automobiles as soon as this one wears out, but with the way it is running and performing now, I don't feel that I should have to replace it anytime soon. I expect to get 200000+ miles out of this vehicle with no problems.

Take care of your Pontiac, and it will take care of you. My car has never been a problem and has never left me stranded. This has been as reliable an automobile as my Honda which had 385000 miles on it when I traded.

1997 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4L 4 cylinder 150 hp from North America

Summary:

A great first car

General Comments:

This car has a good engine, but some really stupid things have gone wrong with it. For instance, the knobs for the heater and AC has fallen off. The key hole for the trunk has fallen out. This car was just manufactured cheaply.

1997 Pontiac Grand Am SE 4.0 from North America

Summary:

Good car, great mileage!

Faults:

Shortly after purchase, water pump went out. 78,000 miles. Would have been expensive if Hubby couldn't fix it.

It enjoys eating alternators. Bought one from Napa with lifetime warranty, have gone through 4 so far.

Window motors went out at 125,000 miles, which is to be expected with 3 little kids.

General Comments:

Gas mileage is great! 44 MPG on the highway!

Always starts no matter the weather.

Seats were really comfortable until the last 10,000 miles, simply wearing out.

It's been a great car, but it gets too small when the kids hit near 6' tall!

Hi, I too have experienced the malfunctioning of the power window motors. If you need some guidance in replacing the motors, let me know. I just replaced both of mine. burns0247@yahoo.com.

1997 Pontiac Grand Am SE 3.1 189 from North America

Summary:

I must have gotten a good one

Faults:

Replaced passenger power window motor at about 75000 miles and the driver side motor last week, at 108000 miles. burns0247@yahoo.com if you need help doing this, as it seems to be a common problem. The dealer was going to charge me $325 each to replace. I bought the motors for $40 each and did it myself.

I previously reported that I was getting water inside, well it continues and I still don't know where it's coming from. I drilled some drain holes in front and behind the front seats, but it still collects if front of the front seats even with the drain holes.

The horn still is in-op.

I think I have a bad CV joint on the driver's side, it's clicking like crazy.

General Comments:

I have had this car for 4 years now and it has yet to let me down. Sure, it's had a few problems, but nothing like these other owners are saying. I've replaced a couple parts here and there, but have not had all the engine problems that I'm hearing about. The water pump and alternator are holding up just fine even though they seem to be chronic problems for other people.

The seats could be a little more supportive on the thighs.

The AC is still pumping cold air after 8 years of use and never being charged.
