1994 Pontiac Grand Prix SE review from North America

"Great car, but expensive to maintain"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

AC seemed to over freeze when the car was 2 years old @ 24,000 and steam started coming out of the vents smelling like rubbing alcohol.

Always takes awhile to get cold on a hot day. AC smells funny sometimes.

AC compressor was weak @ 46,000 miles. Still blows cold.. but eventually, will need a new compressor, accumulator and orifice tube.

Console cover broke off @ 40,000 miles.

Ignition key got stuck in the ignition @ 43,000 miles.

Needed new belt, alternator, battery @ 50,000 miles.

Waterpump went bad @ 50,000 miles

Almost had a cracked block.

Horn tone wore down.

Crankshaft sensor died @ 62,000 miles.

Emergency blinker switch came loose @ 50,000 miles. Would need to replace the whole entire rack and pinion switch for $300.

Keyless Entry System broke @ 60,000 miles. $300 for a transmitter module.

Put an aftermarket alarm on for $100 (known on these models).

Many problems with rear brakes.

Motor mounts were going bad @ 50,000 miles.

Water gets in trunk in a high pressure car wash.

Needed spark plugs and wires, car was bucketing on highway.

Leaks oil from time to time.. only a few droplets.. Was told that I have a coverage valve cracked (known on these models).

Trany mount went bad @ 70,000 miles.

Rear passenger window doesn't go down, needs a new motor.

Radio button sometimes doesn't turn the dial.

Driver's light doesn't switch on when pressing the button.

Driver's window motor went bad @ 80,000 miles.

Struts and shocks went bad @ 80,000 miles.

Muffler making a putting sound @ 100,000 miles.. Still puts after the catalytic converter was replaced.

Driver power window master switch went bad @ 100,000 miles.

Power steering pulley fell out of position @ 100,000 miles.

AC freezes up after being on for a long time.

General comments?

The car drives very nice and has good handling. Very good on gas. I can get up to 30 mpg. It does have more power when the AC is off.

It tends to be when I use my AC it works harder and uses more power taking away performance. No big deal.

Must turn off AC after a long time, does freeze up, but does blow cold.

There is a delay on a hot day.

Had new motor mounts, tranny mount, rear brakes, power window master switch, window motor, power steering pulley, crankshaft sensor, catalytic converter replaced.

All the other repairs were done except the emergency blinker. $300 to fix?? Over a switch that fell out? Muffler still puts.. No one can find out why.

Make sure you maintain the car.. Go to a very good shop and have them do a thorough inspection. You never know what goes next. It can be working great, and then the next day, it doesn't.

MAINTENANCE IS THE KEY!!
