Re: Clio 1.2 16v (05) plate
Had just been surfing net trying to ascertain why my service light and airbag light had both come on simultaneously, and found this site, seems like I'm not alone...
Does anyone have a quick fix for this? or is it going to be a trip to dealership and large amounts of cash down the pan?
I have a clio 1.4 dynamique
last year my car decided that it would start to judder quite badly bit like jelly being shakin on a plate and lose a lot of power
i spoke to a friend who said he had a megane that did the same
so I took it to a garage and they replaced a coil.
No problems up until 2 days ago, i was driving along then I
heard a small popping sound, then my clio was shaking and losing power as it did last year, great I thought.
Went to start it today to take it to the garage, it won't even start this time!!!
Which is making me think either all the coils have gone or its something else.
I'm not happy as I live on my own and cannot afford for this to keep happeneing, I'm still paying the car off until next year!!!
I'm definatley getting rid of it next year
the garage are coming to get it in the morning
just hope it gets sorted!!!
I too am going to write to watchdog
renault should be paying for these repairs not us!!!

I have recently bought a 1997 Renault Clio Maxim 1.4. I had it serviced, could not get revs down below 950. Now it stalls at traffic lights and I have to wait for about ten minutes before it starts again. Anyone else have this problem or knows how to sort out. I have had new spark plugs.

1.2 16v Clio Dynamique '03.
No major problems with the car (except for the standard rattly sunroof) until this year when the battery would go dead after 3 or 4 days of no use. I've replaced the battery a couple of times, and the AA have found no fault with the car. More recently the engine would over rev when turned on (around 4000rpm) for a little while, before dying down to normal.
At the moment the car is sitting on my driveway, dead, after the battery ran out once again. I tried jump starting it (usually works) but to no avail... The engine tries to turn, but then is choked off after a couple of seconds.
Pretty much at a loss with what to do, I've been told it could be the alternator by a couple of people (with regards to the battery). I guess its time to call the AA... again.
Hi. I recently had the same problems as many others re: electric management light coming on and stalling in my 2001 Renault Clio 1.2 16v. For information I thought I would share how I resolved the issue.
I originally took the car to my local Renault dealership (Toomey Renault Southend) to be diagnosed - they couldnt diagnose it (but wanted £80 for their trouble), they suggested a new ECU (£596) although this might not be the problem but they wont know until I've paid to have the ECU put in, if it wasn't the ECU then they would then change the wire loom (£433) - I obviously didn't agree to any work being done. Following this I did my own research and found this site, also spoke to VOSA who were well aware of the problem with the protective box behind the engine rubbing against wires. Renault customer services werent interested due to expired warranty. I then went to an independent Auto Electrical Specialist (Southend Auto Electics Ltd), who said the first thing they always do with all electrical faults on Mark 2 Clios is take the protective box out and throw it away as it's not needed (also due to the known issues re: rubbing against wires), insulate the wiring loom and check all connections. In the end they just replaced some connectors and insulated the loom, no problems since (200 miles later still fine!).
So, by no means go to your Renault dealership with this as they are not trained re: this faulty protective box, because if they were trained it would mean Renault admitting they have made a manufacturing fault regarding it and they would have to do a recall (which isn't to say a competent technician working for Renault may go the extra mile to diagnose the fault, i.e. not just read the computer read out). Go to an independent AUTO ELECTRICAL SPECIALIST, preferably one with a good name, and hopefully you'll be OK. I was also advised by the specialist technician not to sell the car (as I was thinking about it) as this box is the only problem they see with Clio's, otherwise they're a great and reliable car, which I must admit I agreed with completely until I found this site as I really enjoy driving it. Shame I can't say the same about the Renault Company or their "specialist" technicians.
Clio 54 sport 182 Airbag and Service light on?
Hi I have a similar fault as a few of you...
Airbag and service light on for a few weeks then off for a Couple of days etc etc...
I am a qualified mechanic, but have still not been able to find the fault!!
So far I have, Tested both front seat airbags, passenger airbags, steering wheel airbag and all wiring for pretensioners etc... all seems correct!
I then took it to Renault (due to remaining warranty) who after an hour of checking everything on their computers told me,"sorry can't find the fault it appears fine", "if you want us to keep looking it will be £50 an hour" I then left Renault never to return!
Tomorrow I plan to dissemble various parts of my Clio until I find the cause of this fault once and for all! I will then post my findings. Wish me luck!
One more thing that may help... After routine service maintanance Renault have a habit of putting slightly to much oil into the 2.0 sport engines. This causes the Emission light to come on and stay on. This can be easily fixed by draining a little oil out followed by a long drive.

I have 1.2 16v renault clio 2002 model, same problems as all above, black box at the rear of engine compartment rubs through wire loom, causing all sorts of probs, in my case driving on motorway at 70mph, then total loss of power, electrics warning light comes on,and car reverts to idle mode, very very dangerous, vosa should get more involved with this, soon!!wiring loom now getting repaired, but not at a main dealer, they are hopeless...
My son has the same 1.2 Clio Dym 02. and has just started having the same problem of the coil light coming on and cutting out or uneven tick over.
I'm contacting watchdog, these car manufacturers are a law to themselves.. I thought under UK law if a product developed this kind of fault within six years it was deemed to have always have been there and you can claim under warranty!!
Steve.
I have a 1.2 clio dynamique car judders now and again also toxic fume light came back on today 6 weeks after having a new ECU fitted to cure the problem- did'nt know this was a common fault until reading this forum.

I have a 1.2 16v Clio Expression 51 plate. In July of this year after driving from Plymouth to Milton Keynes with no probs, 20 miles from home at 70mph my rev counter suddenly shot up to the maximum and then lost power completely stalling. This left me coasting along at 70 trying to stop. I managed to re-start the engine and the electrical warning light came on for a brief moment. The car had hardly any power and was misfiring all the way home. The next day it wouldn't start at all. I called the AA who said the security metal box covering the wiring loom was vibrating so much against the engine that it was causing the loss of power and electrical light to come on. Took to Renault who told me 1. the Oxygen sensor had gone, 2. the head gastket had gone 3. oil leak in the selector shaft 4. Exhaust mounts broken 5. Rear wiper blade needs replacing 6. Number plate light bulb gone. They never bothered looking at the problem the AA found. I wouldn't let them touch the head gaskett - they couldn't give a decent enough explanation of the symptoms / evidence and I knew more than the mechanic. After paying for the rest and hoping my car was OK I drove it back to Devon. Only for the problems to start again. To date I have had the battery replaced and today (2nd time this week) it is with Renault for the electrical fault / loss of power. Renault finally admitted defeat, they reset the ECU and didn't charge me as they couldn't work out the problem. That very day it broke down again and I called the AA. This time the AA guy used a hammer and removed the security black box covering the loom as it was vibrating so much against the engine and causing it to cut out. Car ran perfectly for a 100 miles and 2 days later died again (electrical fault / loss of power). When sat on the driveway the rev counter jumps all over the place and when it finally settles it drops down so low it is almost of the scale and intermitantly stalls and takes several attempts to start. Took it straight back to Renault and they are now investigating the MAPs sensor which is the only consistent fault code now. Fingers crossed this is now it. As for the head gasket - still no evidence plus independenet inspection can't find anything so far saving £900. I think they just get picky when they don't know what the fault is. As for replacing the selector shaft after supposed oil leak - gear box has never been the same since and constantly sticks. I sometimes have to use both hands to get it out of neutral. Where as before it was a dream. I love my clio, but lately I don't feel safe and I am starting to take it personally ha ha.
My advice is definately remove the black security box its more hassle than it is worth.
Good luck, Haze.
Hi, my daughters 3 year old Clio has Exhaust emissions light flashing plus car in " limp mode"
Took car to Renault dealer for £100 diagnosis + another £100 (nice round figure) for the charcoal canister +fit after it was suggested that this " could be the problem"
Garage cleared the error codes so the dashboard light went out (great) but 10 days later back on and flashing + limp mode again.
Taking it to bosch specialist next week for diagnosis and hopefully repair if they can pinpoint problem.
It seems garages can't be precise on what problem is and customer left paying and just hoping for the best.
Not good enough.
Clio taken to Bosch specialist, mechanic called to say fault code was indicating engine missfire.
Further investigation showed missfire on 3 cylinders and mechanic reccomended I replaced all four coils and a new set of plugs.
Car now fine (bill £217)
This independant specialist identified fault efficiently whereas Renault dealer technician could not be pinned down to what the problem was!
Seems some Renault technicians (or 1 at the very least) are not properly trained which has the potential to be very expensive.

With reference to my earlier posting, Renault have now had may car for a week. When my car broke down like I predicted and called the AA as I was told to by my local dealer, they said that there was a fault with the MAPS sensor and gave me the fault code to pass to Renault. However, Renault have since come back to me ignoring what the AA said and they have said that I need a new Loom (£300). Although the comforting thing (NOT) was when they said that they are only 90% certain that this will solve the problem. But they can't do anything else without replacing it first. When I queried the other £600 I had spent trying to get this problem solved since July and if I could have a refund I got lots of ums and ahs and then a NO! So my bill when I finally get the car back will be up to £900 and if a new Loom does solve the problem then I am left out of pocket due to their inadequacies to solve the problem first time round. I am not happy and Renault have not filled me with confidence.
Haze.
Hi all... this is madness,,,.
I have had the MAP sensor, as most of the posts suggest, changed and the issue continues...!!!
I phoned Renault as I run the car on a diagnostic check and it came up with three issues..
1 the MAP sensor
2 the brake sensor
3 a fuel sensor...code, but not recognised.
3 incidentally the local garage could not fix as the computer came up as not recognised for the fault code... the garage have said that it's a ploy for Renault to get people to go to them...
I challenged Renault with this and they said quote " yes it would appear that way "... what does that mean..???
You don't want to believe it however after reading this thread... well... wouldn't you...???
This is out of control and costing people a lot of money... its about time Renault do the decent thing and acknowledge this and provide a fix...
Email me @ charliealiciadunt@hotmail.com if you have any suggestions or if you have had better luck than us so far...
I have been having problems with the electrical fault coming on my Renault Clio 1.2 16v for around 3 months. First this would happen in reverse gear, but it then started to happen in normal driving, especially in traffic and when coming to a stop in 1st gear, the engine would stall and the lights would come on, the revs would bounce around for a few seconds, the only way to stop this would be to keep the revs up for a few seconds. It has been on a diagnostics machine 5 times with the same code - 'Map Circuit Sensor'. I have had two mechanics check out the car and the wiring seems to be OK, no water anywhere etc. It has recently been to the dealership who did there own diagnostics test and it came with 'map sensor'. The vehicle was road tested and they advised it did not stall and they do not know what the problem is.
I have contact written to the Managing Director at Renault Head office regarding this issue and wrote to VOSA. Renault need to rectify the problems on this vehicle.
The address for Renault Head office is:

Hope this helps - I am still struggling.
