I have a Clio automatic 98 1400. I had a problem. It does not start, I changed a sensor under the distributor (temperature sensor right side). This solved the problem, good luck.

Argh... update... my dad popped round to "have a quiet word" with the lovely honest people who sold me the car... they've moved! The house is empty!!!

I'm starting to get a very bad feeling about this. I gave my dad a list of stuff from here to be checked out, garage said none of that stuff looks problematic, they disassembled the insides and put them back together and it's now working, but they've recommended my parents keep it there for a week and run about in it to see what happens, so that if it goes, it's near to the garage.

Gutted.

I have had same issues as mentioned previously...

Renault Clio 1.2 Expression (2002 MK2).

The airbag light has come on numerous times, no effect on the performance, but it tends to anger me if I can't make it go off. (As mentioned before, moving the wires underneath the driver's seat, or passengers seat).

Yesterday after heavy rain, I had been driving my car for around 8 minutes, and suddenly there was a loss of power, which I instinctively thought meant I had missed a gear. So I went back to 2nd and then 1st, but still the car had no power.

Then suddenly I was going again without restarting the engine, and as it regained power, the electric fault light came on.

Other than that, no problems, since February of this year. I put the 2nd issue down to the cold and very wet weather, and have noticed the car has more power on a tank above 1/2 full.

I have a 2005 Clio, and sadly like so many others, coming home this evening, it felt like my car was chugging like the local train in 2nd gear, and no power when going up the hill until the revs were really high. I have read a lot on here tonight, and my husband will be carrying out a mini service on her tomorrow to replace plugs, but I would be interested in getting him to check out this 'tamperproof black box'; we have both looked for this and can't locate it. Anyone give an indication of where or what it looks like? Perhaps if we are having trouble finding it, it is has broken off???

What is the function of the black box, and what is contained in it? (aside from all future problems for Renault owners?)

I used to love my Clio, and refused to get rid of her, but if this is the start of my troubles, then I will part company with her soonest! I will not be as understanding of Renault's poor quality as so many of you have! Hats off to you all!

In response to your comment above...

I think the black box is literally just above the actual engine, it is maybe 3 inches wide.

You can't see it in the picture above, but I believe it is just behind the back of the engine.

I am almost relieved to find these comments!! I've had my Renault Clio for almost 2 years now, and had problems pretty much since day one! The same as everyone else is commenting about. Driving along, and then the engine loses power, the revs drop right down and car slows, until it decides to work again! I've taken it to garage after garage, but no one can find the fault. Because it doesn't happen all the time, and never seems to happen in the garage, I'm sure they think I'm making it up, and there's nothing wrong with the car. It's back in again at the moment. Seems to be worse after heavy rain (unfortunately seems to happen a lot here!!). Once it gets out of the garage this time, I'm selling it!!!

Hi, I have just finished fixing my daughter's Renault Clio 1.4 on a 51 plate; exactly the same symptoms as earlier comments, rough running at low revs and lack of power. Give it a bit of welly, and it revs and runs fine. Found the coil pack on No 3 cylinder not working at low revs, replaced for £18.00 with a pattern one. Hope this helps someone out.

Hi, I just bought my new Renault Clio in March 2010, and for the last month I have problems starting the car. I have to keep revving for about 5 minutes, and even when it eventually starts, it's chugging for the first few metres - going to the garage on Saturday, but would like to know what is causing it, so I can make sure the garage checks it out; they have mentioned reprogramming it, which should take half an hour, is there anything else they should be looking at?

I had posted on her a while back with regards to all the problems mentioned, I have had the wiring loom changes, coil pack changed, plugs changed, etc.

Touch wood, she's running perfect now.

I would advise everyone to remove the silly black metal box at the back of the engine bay, in the center by the windscreen. It does damage the wiring and cause them all to touch, creating a power failure.

Hi, my daughter bought her 1.2i 16v Dynamique 2002 Clio just before Xmas, and has never actually got to drive it properly yet, as it's been in garage most of the time. Had it for a few days, and toxic fume light came on, and basically has been in the garage since. Its had new spark plugs, coil pack, throttle body checked and cleaned, new battery cause this wasn't charging. Had it put on diagnostic test, which showed fault in oxygen sensor, so oxygen sensor (lambda) replaced. Ran OK for first few days after getting it back, and now toxic fume light has come back on. She is really fed up, as she is really unable to use her car and she hasn't long passed her test. And now to top it all off, her sunroof has started leaking.

If anyone has any suggestions to her problem, she would be most grateful as she doesn't want to spend any more unnecessary money on garage fees, as she doesn't exactly have a well paid job, so the cheaper the fix, the better.

If I had read this forum before, I would never have agreed to her purchasing a Renault Clio.

I have a Clio 1.6 1999.

I've been having problems with the fuel injection warning light problem. It comes on, flashes and won't let you drive the car. If you leave it for an hour it starts no problem.

I've had the car at a Renault dealers. They can't find a fault. If anyone can help, please let me know.

Thanks.

I've had a Clio 1.2 Dynamique on a 51 plate for 9 years, and for the last 3 years I have been experiencing the engine management light and the loss of power problem everyone else is having.

I have replaced all the sensors / replaced the coil pack and spark plugs, and removed the black box. None of this solved the problem.

When I had the car serviced, my local garage adjusted the throttle and I had no problems for about 8 months. Just had the car MOT'd and serviced, and the problem is now back. Have asked for the throttle adjustment to be made again, but this doesn't seem to help.

Someone must have found a solution to this, but it just seems we are all having the same problems, but no one has found the magic solution yet!

Hope someone has a solution, because this is driving me and hundreds of others mad.

Thanks.
