1987 Toyota Camry Gli from UK and Ireland - Comments

What things have gone wrong with the car?

At 74,000ml gear lever jumped out of 5th, costly repair. This did not happen to later cars of same model as a modification was fitted.

At 110,000ml the original battery had to be replaced.

At 111,000ml the distributor failed.

First (and only) bulb went at over 100,000ml. Exhausts and tyres have been the only other replacements, apart from plugs, filters etc. Occasional rough running about every 2yrs. Simple free adjustment to carb.

General comments?

The dealer from whom we bought the new car was excellent - Llwyd Coed Motors, Aberdare. However they lost the dealership and Wilsons of Aberdare took over. They failed to find a simple fault and charged me for new plugs £43. Had to write to Toyota to force garage to refund money. Llwyd Coed had, in the past made the small adjustment required free and within minutes.

When the distributor failed, the dealer in Carmarthen incorrectly diagnosed fault and charged me for a new coil and ignitor, cost £400. The dealer in Newport found the fault and lent me a distributor to try. This has solved the problem. Carmarthen have promised me a refund for the parts they fitted in error.

Wish I could afford a Lexus.

Simple adjustment to carb???

Where exactly is the carb in a fuel injected car?

My thoughts exactly. How can a car with an injector have the carb refitted?
