1992 Toyota Corolla All-Trac Wagon 1.6L AE95 from North America

Summary:

The best $1600 I ever spent

Faults:

Routine exhaust work (expensive on these wagons).

Alternator died/replaced.

Major rust problems.

Locking differential computer failure.

General Comments:

The Corolla All-Trac Wagon is one of the finest cars ever built. The engines in particular are extremely reliable. Mine still purrs like a kitten despite its high KM. The 1.6L engine is someone weak but acceptable.

This car is a dream in the snow, and drives circles around most modern AWD cars. I have even taken it for some moderate off-roading on old logging roads and mud pits with little difficulty.

They are however fairly rare, and finding one with a good body and low KMs is difficult. If you do find one, get it!

I will keep driving mine until it dies. Likely, the engine will still be going strong when the car is a pile of rust.

Update - Still going strong.

What's the mileage now? Any issues?

1992 Toyota Corolla XLi 1.3 (4E-FE) from Norway

Summary:

Great car, served me well!

Faults:

At purchase, this car was already a wreck: Very rusty, bad rear suspension, motor oil leak were amongst its more obvious issues. Front suspension was replaced short time before purchase. Also before purchase: Complete Tectyl anti-rust treatment of underbody.

At ~190,000 km: Minor issues with tension leads. Well, major issue, minor solution...

At ~230,000 km: Complete exhaust system replacement, from manifold to muffler -- it basically fell apart because of rust. Also replaced front left panel because of rust.

At ~250,000 km: Broken alternator, needed replacement.

At ~290,000 km: Oil leakage and rear suspension issues made the car obsolete, as it didn't pass the obligatory bi-annual vehicle inspection.

General Comments:

Considering this cars general condition at purchase, it's a miracle that it has made it through five years, 100,000 km. and several lengthy road trips.

Fuel consumption is incredibly low.

The car is very comfortable and has a very good 'feel'.

Not a durable car in northern, snowy regions. The road salt will make this car rust away.

In spite of this cars small engine (88hp), I had no trouble driving four passengers and a ton of baggage up steep hill sides. I also used this car to lug around a ~500 kg. trailer, without noteworthy difficulties.

1992 Toyota Corolla DX from North America

Summary:

This car's a monster!

Faults:

Nothing can phase this car, period.

General Comments:

I have put 30,000 miles on this car in little under a year, with only changing the oil and that's it! I run the hell out of it too, but it stills keeps on ticking. Not to mention I spend maybe $100 in gas for the whole month.

I have hit a deer going 40 in this thing, and the deer bounced right off surprisingly, and side swiped somebody with very little damage done.

This car is a beast. It's only negative, is it's kinda uncomfortable to drive and it won't catch your eye, but it makes up for that in all the money I've saved in it.

I find it rather entertaining that people claim 30MPG on small cars and you say you spend $100 a month on gas (only).

I get 15MPG and spend $80 per month on gas.

I obviously drive less than you do, but I also cause less wear on the roads, less congestion on streets which is the biggest concern for those worried about exhaust fumes causing harm. Congestion equals sitting and idling.

Congrats on your fine purchase.

1992 Toyota Corolla DX 1.6 EFI from North America

Faults:

CV joint, pan gasket, exhaust leak.

General Comments:

What can I say, very reliable, cheap to service, great on gas and easy to drive. I bought this car from old man who rarely used back doors and even right front door, so my car is extremely clean and drive exelent.
