1988 Toyota Pickup Reg cab 2 wheel drive 22R carbeurator from North America

Summary:

Most reliable vehicle ever made!!

Faults:

The only issues I have had were I replaced the slave cylinder for the clutch, the master cylinder for the brakes and the parking brake cable. Outside of that just regular things like brakes, plugs wires and cap and tires. The heat comes out lukewarm because the heat controls are messed up and needs what I found out is called a "spider". It has been impossible to find. So the slider controls just flop around. The blower still works though so I do have a defroster.

General Comments:

This is by far the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Besides the issues mentioned, it has just been regular maintenance to keep her on the road. A guy owed me $500 for a while and he told me I could have the truck if I wanted it. It had been sitting in his yard for I don't know how many years, but there were weeds growing in the bed! The truck was FILTHY inside and out and also had a broken windshield. I knew the guy was broke and I would not get my $500 so I took the truck.

After a thorough cleaning the truck looked pretty decent. I changed the oil, plugs wires and cap. Put a new battery in it and it fired right up. The tires were dry rotted and had flat spots from sitting so long so they were replaced along with the windshield. All said , I put around $800 into it to get it road worthy.

The truck had 119000 original miles on it and it now has 158000. This truck starts every single time and has never ever let me down. It is my daily driver. I only work 7 miles from home so I do not put a lot of miles on it commuting. I use it for fishing and hauling our kayaks around. I built a kayak rack for my wife's and my kayak. I have been driving this truck every day for the past 5 years and I have been asked to sell it many many times. I will never sell this truck. I also get around 24 mpg on the highway which is great. Definitely the best truck I have ever owned.

1988 Toyota Pickup 2wd Standard cab 2.4 litre 22RE 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Bulletproof

Faults:

Broken fan belt.

General Comments:

Not only is this truck and 22RE fuel injected engine legendary, it's tough as nails. I've overloaded it many times to the point where the axle is riding on the rubber bump stops and it just keeps on plowing along. And gets excellent mpg to boot!

1988 Toyota Pickup r22 from North America

Summary:

Greatest LUV truck ever

Faults:

After I pulled it out of the woods behind my grandfather's house, oil leaked like I was trying to hold it in a sieve.

Seats were worn out when I got it from windows being left down.

General Comments:

My grandfather bought this truck brand new, and drove it for 10 years, then parked it behind his house and let it sit for about 6 years. When me and my dad pulled it out, and decided to try and get it running again, we ended up spending about $150 to get it running, which included replacing gas, cleaning the carb. and replacing brakes, and it ran like new. Didn't have to replace the clutch until 250,000 miles; that's a stock clutch mind you.

I did end having to pour old oil into the engine just to keep oil in it, because if I didn't the whole engine would run dry in about 2 weeks, but I worked at a shop at the time, so this was no big deal; I would just pour other people's old oil into my truck. It ran great for another 4 years while I put another 400,000 miles on it. Then one month ago I lent it to my sister, and she didn't know you have to check the oil so often, and fried the engine.

We ended up rebuilding the engine, and it ran alright, but never liked doing highway speeds after that. Then about 3 months later the block split, and I tried to find a new engine, but down here in the south people use the r22's for baby boomer racing, so the cheapest I could find was one for almost $2,000 that had 250,000 miles on it. It wasn't worth it, so I scrapped it, but without a doubt, the best little truck I ever owned.
