1987 Toyota Supra review from North America
"A high performance bargain"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Head Gasket had to be replaced at about 250,000 Km.
Brakes done at 235,000 Km.
Air flow meter had to be replaced at 225,000 Km.
General comments?
For the amount of Km's on this car it ran great! Very quick and handled like a dream. Turbo spooled relatively quickly (around 2500rpm) and boost could be felt, even until the day I crashed it!
I probably should have let the car go at 250,000 when the head gasket went, but I just couldn't do it, the car grew on me. The unit steel body construction was starting to rust away. The previous owners of this car neglected it.
The automatic transmission absolutely handled everything I did to it. I was doing neutral drops at about 4000 rpm to light the rear tires up and it handled it no problem. This was a regular occurrence and I was surprised it lasted the 3 years.
Head gasket blew at about 250,000 km's. I used ARP head bolts and got my mechanic to tighten them to 72 ft/lbs of torque rather than the 52 that the manual states.
For the amount I paid for the car and the amount of repairs that had to go into it, seemed reasonable. I would definitely buy another for fun.
