2000 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 from North America

I will never buy a Volkswagen AGAIN!

I purchased my car in November 2007, and after one month it would not go into 4th gear, and the panel where your speedometer and odometer are went out as well as the radio.

I took it to a Volkswagen dealer, because they are the only ones who can diagnose it correctly, and they couldn't find the problem. They replaced the electrical wiring as well as the computer in the transmission, and still could not fix it.

We then took it to a transmission specialist who rebuilt it. After 2 months in the Volkswagen shop I could drive it again. 1 month after I had it back, the speedometer went out and I took it back to Volkswagen. They said it was the vehicle speed gear and replaced it.

Now the speedometer works, but my car won't go into 4th again, and they are telling me since they didn't test drive it before they replaced the gear, that they can't prove it was working fine because tearing out the transmission. IRATE!

I love it

Well knock on wood, I haven't had anything go wrong with my car at all, except when I wash my car I have noticed there is a little bit of water on my driver's side seat, right by the head rest, after I get done. Don't really know what's causing that.

And my emissions control light came on, resulting in my check engine light coming on. Took it to the dealer, and they had a recall on it and checked it, and it took the check engine light and emissions control light off for awhile. Then I hit a pot hole and it came back on again, so I'm clueless. If anyone knows what the problem is, please let me know ice_blinga@yahoo.com thanks.

With gas/fuel prices like they are today, this car was a very good investment

My Check Engine light is on all the time.

My trunk won't shut.

My center armrest doesn't shut.

My Emergency Brake doesn't catch.

My first gear thunks into gear.

The seats attract every spec of dust in America.

General Comments:

I think that my little Jetta is really cute, and it gets me where I need to go. There are a few things that really annoy me about it, but overall it's a good little car. It's very roomy on the inside. The only thing that I really really don't like about it, is that it is slow as anything, but the mileage I get on one tank of fuel is well worth dealing with the lack of speed.

Expensive to own. Questionable reliability

Oxygen sensors failed.

Temperature sensor failed.

Transmission grinds going into 2nd gear.

Engine light always on - dealer can't diagnose.

Car stalls at low speed on turns - dealer can't diagnose.

Plastic cowling fell off (below car).

Glove box hinge broke.

Leaking hose on power steering.

Plastic interior pieces break easily.

General Comments:

Expensive parts.

Dealer cannot repair mystery electrical problems - if it is out of the diagnostic box, they are lost.

Handles alright and looks good.

Constant recalls - Volkswagen has lost its quality reputation.

Jettas are unreliable, especially the electrical components that are assembled in Mexico. VW decided to use cheap labor to assemble their cars for the North American market, and sacrificed the reputation for durability. Dealer upkeep is outrageously expensive! Buy Toyota!

Out of five, this is without a doubt the best car I have ever owned

"Check Engine" light has been on a few times; various oxygen sensors and mass air flow sensor replaced. VW dealer required to accurately read OBC data.

Heated seat element in driver's seat burned through seat cover (and my jeans) while driving! No serious injury, although to have this happen at 75mph was a bit of a scare. VW dealer wisely replaced for free. I don't use them very often anymore.

Numerous plastic trim items in interior have cracked: cup holder, center console lid hinges, one hinge of glove box. Finish on interior plastic like center console, door panel arm rests has worn.

Trunk-mounted CD changer play is erratic during very cold weather.

General Comments:

The car's mechanical systems have been nearly flawless over 113,000 miles and almost 8 years. The clutch, suspension, brakes, exhaust and air conditioning systems are all 100% original. I've had the brakes checked half a dozen times in the past few years and they keep telling me "they're OK". No engine or transmission work has been required. AC still blows cold.

Almost 8 years on, I still love driving this car. It provides a very enjoyable ride and corners well. It accelerates well, but it's not as quick "off the line" as the VR6 model my brother owns.

Monsoon sound system sounds great. A lesser concern than some of these other points, but what the heck.
