2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Piece of crap

Faults:

Cup holders came apart right after the warranty expired.

Replaced the engine at 80,000.

Alarm will not shut off (intermittent). I have to endure 30 seconds of horn beeping and never know when this is going to happen.

I have had to replace oil pan on both motors.

Engine light comes on, codes are dealer specific and I am 100 miles to the nearest dealer.

A/C sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

Can't get it fixed and can't sell it. Mechanics tell me I could get rid of Herpes faster than selling this car.

But... It does drive great, you don't get tired driving this car. It is really too bad that VW has lost its heritage of simplicity and manufactures this nightmare. I don't mean to be negative and I hope someone at VW reads this. I would not buy another VW because of all the little things that you can only get done at the dealer. I bought this car new and have maintained it above and beyond what was expected. DO NOT BUY VW unless they commit to make vehicles that are serviceable (eg. Toyota).

General Comments:

Great comfort and drivability, but the maintenance is a nightmare, I would not buy another VW product again as long as I live. There is no reason to do the things they do to make the car unserviceable by anyone but the dealer or a specialty shop.

2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS V6 from North America

Summary:

I will never buy a VW *AGAIN*!!!

Faults:

I purchased my car brand new. I'm going to just rattle off the problems I've has with it over the years:

Some dates and cost of repair are an estimate. Some I never had fixed.

2001 - O2 sensor was replaced.

2001 - Cup holder broke and was replaced.

2002 - Front speakers blew - dealer would not replace.

2002 - Armrest latch broke - dealer would not replace.

2002 - Glove box latch broke - dealer would not replace.

2002 - 2nd cup holder broke; dealer would not replace.

2002 - Defrost switch for side view mirrors broke.

2003/2004 - "J" joint broke, it works with the power steering, $500.

2005 - Cracked oil pan, $350; I was at the dealership at the time and they would not give me an oil change unless I replaced it.

2005 or 2006 - Driver's side power window broke; dealer replaced.

2007 - Radiator blew, $500.

2008 - $600, Stock CD changer started going out on me.

2008 - Timing belt broke, flew off, smashed my power steering pump and bent tension arm $750 without replacing the T. arm.

2009 - Replaced 2nd O2 sensor, a vacuum, got 4 new tires, major tune up $1400 (yes $1400).

2009 - Same mechanic "your oil pan is cracked" wow another cracked oil pan. Did not replace.

2009 - My stock CD changer hasn't worked in 6 months.

Today - 8/18/09 my car won't start. I don't know if it just a battery thing or an alternator. I had somebody yank the attena out of my car in 2001 and the quoted price from the dealer that I was told to fix it $300+

General Comments:

I love the way she looks and I love the interior.

That's it :/

Well she handles well and has some pick-up on the freeway.

2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0 from North America

Faults:

Keeps blowing headlights - one every 4 months or so.

Globe box came off hinges.

Muffler separates at headers once a year or so.

Air conditioner only blows cold on the highway at high speeds.

Had to replace the container for the washer fluid - it had a leak.

Drivers door lock stopped working.

Front grill assembly is beginning to fall off.

Burns/leaks oil.

Breaks constantly squeak regardless who puts them on or type...

Knob for the side mirror adjustment has been knocked off twice as per poor placement.

AM radio will not come through clearly regardless of system installed and new antenna.

ABS sensors keep going (turning off my ABS)

Replaced cup holder - clips that keep it from sliding out all the way failed - tried to repair but in the end had to spring $150 to replace them.

General Comments:

This is a great car for those who love "solid" cars. It is made to feel like a tank - it does get nice fuel economy and is comfortable enough to drive.

However there seem to be more than its fair share of problems. Every stupid little thing seems to need replacing. The muffler (never need full replacement as they are built very well) always separates somewhere near the headers. Annoying background noise when listening to AM. And even the washer fluid reservoir needed replacing as it developed a leak!

These cars are superior to "feel" while on the road to similar size and priced rivals. But it's simply not worth the hassle of going to the garage every 6 months for the stupidest things!

I even replaced the stupid cup holders that fold out... I mean cmon! Can't you just put a hole in the arm rest or console like the rest of the manufacturers???
