I have my first car, a 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE with 86k miles, for half a year now. The Service Engine Soon light went on the first week I got it from the dealer, which cost me $80 to read the code and have the computer reset and $400 something to replace two rear O2 sensors a few days later when the light came back on. I paid quite some price for this car and really expected it to be reliable. It has been good since until tonight the SES light was on again. Also, I always fill premium gas.

I doubt if it could be the gas cap problem, as many suggest before. I will refill gas tomorrow and see what happens. The car drives perfect, I can't see other serious problem. Given the comments made above about repeatedly replacing sensors or coils which cost a lot of money, can I leave the light on as long as the car is running great? I have inspection valid till 2008 so I was thinking I won't have it checked till then, would that cause problems? Has anyone done this and what is the result? Thanks for any information, please email me at kikicattyhy@hotmail.com.

My Nissan Maxima had a problem with the 'service light on' and the code stating there was a problem with the O2 sensor. Take it to the dealership and have them re-flash the computer. There is an error in the programming, not with the emissions package.

I have 1999 Maxima. My car engine is suddenly running rough. First, it only happens everytime I stop at D gear. The RPM gauge randomly jumps up and down. Now the engine shakes while driving too. In the past, I had a misfire problem with bad ignition coil and MAF. The problems were detected the Service Engine Soon light on. So, I could read the trouble codes and had those replacements. After driving almost 50k miles without problem, this time it has not triggered the Service Engine Soon light. I have no idea. If anyone has the same problem, I would appreciate your advice. You can email me at hungtdao@yahoo.com Thanks.

I have a 2000 Maxima SE with ~96k miles. The engine started running rough and the SES light came on simultaneously. To troubleshoot I took it to Auto-Zone for a Diagnostics test.

P codes 1320 and 0302 were present. 1320 means Ignition Signal or Misfire...0302 means #2 cylinder misfire. After talking with a Nissan Tech he said that they will change out all the coils when this happens (expensive...6 coils at ~$70 a piece not counting labor). I decided to test the Coils myself before taking the car in. Using a standard Ohm meter all of the Coils tested properly and showed no malfunctions (which makes me question the technique of changing all the coils).

I ended up replacing the spark plugs. The engine was running rough again and rather than a P0302 code for the #2 cylinder, I'm now getting a P0306 for the #6 cylinder... this could be a bad spark plug so I'm replacing it this afternoon to see if the problem will be fixed.

Just be aware that the coils may not be the problem, it could be as easy as changing the spark plugs when you get the P1320 and P030X codes. An Ohm meter is $20 at Auto-Zone and you can save yourself a lot of cash rather than changing out the coils. Be sure to buy the Nissan Maxima Haynes manual it will also help in troubleshooting the problem yourself.

The 2001 Nissan Maxima SE.

Oh let me count the ways... I have had several problems with my Maxima. I have very similar compliments and complaints as most of the entries before mine.

Love the comfort and power cannot stand the ongoing problems!

At 40K I replaced the engine coil, 68K the service engine soon light started it's on and off again bit. I took the car to my local Nissan dealership and got sent out the door with a recall bulletin to reset the O2 sensor for a faulty reading on the catalytic converter. Warranty on the converter goes until 70k... At 74K I have the service engine soon light on again. So I proceed back to the dealership. Catalytic converter is shot!!! At this point I am as mad as a hornet! It takes 4 weeks to get Nissan to half the cost with me ($980.00 split!) and now 20K later the light is on again and again it is the 2nd catalytic converter! can you believe it? What would you do?

Advice. if bank 1 or 2 goes out on your Maxima. Replace both of them.

Good luck.

Just bought a Jeep instead of the Pathfinder.

It is very simple to replace ignition coils and spark plugs on a Nissan Maxima. I, myself, own a 99 GXE and I bought the car about 150K miles. The SES light was on with no evident problems. Sure enough, a week of driving and it starts to sputter, jump, pull hard and what not. I decided to look into it myself and read the NUMEROUS forums and posts online about Maximas (what a surprise). I took the car to Autozone so they can spit out the codes (they check SES lights for error codes for free). I got two codes regarding ignition coils, a multiple cylinder misfire and possible NOC sensor (which all goes together). I took it to a mechanic who told me he would charge me 60$ an hour for labor plus the parts (to replace ignition coils). Insane! Then I found a warehouse that sells automotive parts for much, MUCH less and bought one ignition coil for the rear bank and 6 new spark plugs (just in case). Have in mind, I had no idea who the previous owner was and what he or she did to the car, maintenance wise. Without an Ohm meter, I tested out each spark plug in the rear bank and decided that the middle one was the faulty one, but that did NOT fix the problem. Then I went and bought one more ignition coil, this time for the front bank. That fixed my problem! The car has been running fine ever since. But I still have NOT reset the computer so the SES light comes on after about 4 cycles (about). I can just disconnect the negative of the battery and leave it overnight. Btw, it's really difficult to tamper with the computer of this car (it's located by the gas pedal, and it's very hard to pop the compartment open... which opens up a great deal of problems, where you have to screw the bolts clock-wise and counter clock wise to reset the computer). Well, this is my first and LAST Maxima. So far, I have 3 Hondas which I am very proud of and I will NOT, I repeat, I will NOT buy another Nissan ever!!

I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima SE. I have had all the same problems that everyone else has! I was beginning to think it was just me. I don't know if I an relieved or scared at what is next. Anyway, my car kept stalling when I had it in parked and then cut off completely at 65 MPH on the highway! The mechanics said they could not figure it out because no codes were coming up. They ran diagnostics, test drove it trying to make it fail (179 miles!) and it never did... until I got the car back and it died again when I put it in park. The mechanic I went to finally decided to check the throttle body. It was full of carbons. They cleaned it and charged me $300.00. My next car is not going to be Nissan. I am very disappointed with all the problems I have had. P.S. Look out for the air conditioner! Mine went twice. Thanks.. and good luck!

Another Nissan Maxiam engine light problem! And as a woman I get double troube with mechanics... Car started running rough and engine light came on.

1st mechanic) said faulty spark plugs, manifold exhaust leak.

Did not believe them and left. went to nissan dealer.

2nd mechanic/dealer) and these mechanics are running their computer diagnostic tests!: found wrong spark plugs only. they replaced plugs and timed it, ran fine for few weeks and light came on.

3rd mechanic: computer diagnostic test says it is now the catalytic converter!

My plan: to take it back to dealer they have agreed to do a better diagnostic no charge except the $95 I paid the first time.

Long term plan: If I can feel confident I am being told the real problem, will fix the problem and sell it. Drive my trustworthy 1982 VW westfaila!

I do believe with so many having the same problems this is a scam and I will return to this site to keep updated.

I have a 1999 Maxima with 80K miles and the SES light just came on. Took it to a service shop and they told me it was showing a code for ignition system and that it needed the coils replaced. They said they did an ohm test and all the coils were consistent. This is normal they said for this problem with Nissan and said that Nissan has a service bulletin the states to replace all six coils. He says they have done a number of these repairs on Nissan's and they parts guy they called at Nissan to get the coils (which only come in a six pack) said that was his fourth set of coils he had sold today alone and it wasn't even 2:00 PM yet. I was told you have to go through Nissan for these coils and you can't get them after-market. This is not the first problem I have had with the car and are not satisfied with the overall quality. I own other cars (GM & Dodge) that have more miles, harder driving and fewer problems.

2001 maxima.

Had the same problem with my car.

Running rough (without the same power as before.)

CEL will come on and the codes were for the O2 sensors.

Replaced the MAF sensor and reflashed the computer.

Problem solved.

Its actually a common problem. check www.maxima.org.

I also have a 2000 Maxima SE that had started to sputter in the am a month ago. Of course the check engine light came on and I took it in where the mechanic replaced three 02 sensors for over $200 each with labor. The car is still sputtering and now is starting to loose power even after it is warmed up. Took it back and am being told that it is most likely a problem with the Transmission??? I can’t even remotely see how an issue with a transmission would affect a car in this manner. Almost stalls while cold - does not have power when trying to quickly accelerate. Sometimes runs great. Has anyone ever heard of a trans causing these issues?

The car has run like a champ until 85K and I have no regrets with Nissan.

My 2000 Maxima has a check engine light on and the dealer diagnosis was to replace vent control valve and canister. Does anyone know where I can get good quality replacement parts at online at low cost?

My 2000 GLE has 96,000 miles on it and recently the SES and SLIP and TCS OFF lights came on. Car doesn't appear to be driving any different. Took it in yesterday to the Nissan dealership and they told me I had to replace all 6 of my ignition coils to the tune of $900. Is there a way to get rid of this light w/o replacing the coils???
