OK, I think I have the most pathetic of these comments, my trailblazer is a 2005, I got it in April 05 and it has been sounding like a jet engine since august 06, it only has 10000 miles, because I use it only to take the kids to school and going to nearby stores.

It is covered by the warranty, but ALSO the CD player is not working properly, what is their solution? Take the radio off and send it to GM Service headquarter so I have to wait (they say about a week) for a replacement with a hole in my hood.

I am really sad because I love the car, but I am seriously concerned about its quality.

My other car is an Isuzu Rodeo 97 that never lets me down.

I have a 2002 Trailblazer with 56,000 miles on it. Had the water pump replaced a couple of months ago. Today, I called the dealership about the "jet engine" sound and they said the fan clutch is bad and will cost $650 to repair it. I will write an email to GM and include the link to this website so they can see the future business they are losing. I can't imagine why they would not recall these vehicles for this problem and risk losing $30K from each of us when we buy our next vehicle. We'll see. Japanese for me too (unless GM stands behind this)!

Just want to add my 2003 47k mile clutch fan replacement to this list. One can only hope somebody at GM actually cares enough to google this issue to see how many angry customers they have. When I emailed customer service, the only response I got was a card in the mail for a free 10 point inspection. No thanks. Not going to fall for that one. After a front strut, two tail lights, failing gauge cluster...etc, I'm ready for a product provided by a company that cares about the consumer. I hope GM doesn't track me down cause I heard they can create even more problems with a touch of a button via On-Star. I better disconnect the antennae lead tonight:).

Owner of 2002 Trailblazer: 92000 miles and has been great truck. I have had the roaring noise some 6 months ago and had the computer updated with no further problems. I noticed this afternoon a knocking noise and looked at the fan shaft into the water pump and it had some play in it. I don't know if this is just time to replace water pump or something to do with fan clutch problems. Comments from those who had the fan clutch problem and if the repair or service performed, replaced water pump and fan clutch assembly all in one for the app.$650-$700 that is being mentioned here? Info concerning this would be appreciated!

Mine too!! We have a 2002 GMC Envoy with 76,000 miles on. Needs a new fan clutch. They said it was gonna be around $800 to fix. That would pay my car payment for about the next 2-3 months!! I hope they have a recall soon!!!

Same story... 2002 GMC Envoy.. jet engine. Fiance has '04 Durango and it's experiencing the same problem. I've already paid $350 for the dealer to try to fix the Envoy only to be told afterwards when the car was still loud that it would be another $700 to replace the fan clutch. I don't have enough cash lying around to let them play what-ifs on my car.

What happens to the car/engine if we don't replace the fan clutch? All the gauges are in the normal ranges but sometimes the car smells overheated.

I love the look and feel of my Envoy, but I doubt if I'll buy another one.

Wow! I can't believe that with all the comments left on this web site they have not decided to do a recall on at least the parts for the fan clutch on the Trail Blazers. I am now looking at $450.00 right here at Christmas time to be able to have a car to drive and go on vacation. I sure hope everyone takes this to GM to see why they don't stand behind their parts. I have a 2003 Trail Blazer LT. I agree this is a great riding car, but I have also had trouble with the gas tank and the fan clutch. Can't afford to fix it and can't afford to get another car to drive either. I just hope with this new clutch it will hold and it won't go out again like that one person's did on here. I will be contacting GM and I sure hope everyone on here will do the same.

I have a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer LS it has 44,800 miles and every time I'm on the freeway my "service engine soon" light comes on, this is the second time that this has happened to me, and I thought they fixed it the first time. The first time they told me that I didn't tighten my gas cap all of the way, but I did this time, but to no avail it happened again. Does anyone else have this problem? please help.

I had that same problem as you. I probably didn't put the gas cap back on properly so the "service engine soon" light came on. Next time I filled the car up it went off, but of course it came back. Was told to disconnect the negative pole on the battery, to reset the computer, for a couple of hours. So I did & it stopped. Been out for a week now so I guessed it worked :)

BTW. Of course I have the same problem as everyone else. My -02 TB 90K is making a jet engine sound. Was told by a mechanic at Meineke that it probably was the power steering pump making the noise. As I stuck my head down the engine, I too thought it was coming from the power steering pump. Could this be so? Is it possible that I either have another problem than everyone else or that the sound can transfer from the fan clutch & sound as if it is coming from the power steering pump. Thankful for replies. TY. Martin.

I have a 2002 trailblazer with 54k miles. The fan clutch locked up so now it sounds like a semi. Just like everyone else here. To answer the question about is it bad to let it go and the answer is yes. The fan is running over the safe limit and will soon disintegrate (fragment) and that will cost another $150 parts to replace. I would suggest that anyone experiencing this issue should get it replaced ASAP and in the mean time avoid reving the engine too much. My check engine light error code indicated it was triggered at 63 mph. This means drive 55 and don't accelerate real fast or you risk blowing up the fan. My mileage also went way down because of the increased engine load from the fan. Save your receipts and maybe GM will wake up and reimburse us.

I was blown away when I jumped online to see if there was any talk about a fan clutch on the '02 Trailblazers. I've got 48k miles and just got a $700 estimate on the fan's replacement as I grew weary driving around sounding like a jet taking off and watching everyone's head turn and look at me as I drive by.

That and another $200 for a new front right tie rod - a problem I noticed from the day I bought it new.

Not to mention that my brake lights completely went out again!

I currently own a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. At 45,000 miles, the “service 4wd” light came on. Having only used the four-wheel drive feature on the truck approximately 10 times, I thought it unusual to have to repair this part. I contacted Chevrolet and explained my problem. I was told that because I do the fluid maintenance (i.e. oil, coolant, brake and transmission changes) myself, that they would not assist me in paying for the replacement of a computer part. I am still not sure what oil changes have to do with the malfunction of a computer part.

Now, at 70,000 miles, I too have the jet engine under the hood. I had a diagnostic done, and was told that I have a problem with the fan clutch. After reading the comments on this site, I feel fortunate that my Trailblazer made it as long as it did. This, being my first experience with Chevrolet, will be my last. Their product and customer service doesn’t hold a candle to their foreign competitors.

I too have a 2002 Trailblazer LT and 120k I have the jet engine problem and it is as per my client/mechanic the fan clutch. If you try to turn the fan manually when the engine is off normally it should spin easily. if not it is the fan clutch and don't be fooled by any other speculation by the dealership. If you are mechanically inclined or know someone who is you can save 300+$ doing it yourself. Chilton sells a manual that has schematics take your time and watch your knuckles. It is sad that GM has not recalled this yet and no wonder they are doing poorly. As far as your fan "blowing up" if not fixed. Not true unless there are defects in that. Inspect carefully and ask anyone you know so as not to help Gm collect on this pathetic problem.

I also have a 2002 GMC Envoy with 74,000 mile and the fan clutch just went out. I have other recalls to be fixed next week. Hopefully they will soon add this to the recall list. My 1st estimate was $600 - $700. We bought the fan clutch and serpentine belt from a parts store for $250 and hope to get the labor done for $250. This is my 1st GMC vehicle and since I've only had it 9 months I hope this isn't the start of things to come.
