2002 Trailblazer with 51,000 miles had the fan clutch go. $740 later it is fixed. Mechanic said it would have been double at dealer. Nice to know I am not the only one. Besides this issue it has been a great vehicle.

Another '03 Trailblazer to the fan clutch list... 64k miles and sounds like a diesel truck. I come from a GM family and this will absolutely be the last one I ever own. My lease is up in October and I will be buying my first foreign car.

Add another unhappy Trailbreaker owner to the list. I’m in the military and shipped my 2002 Trailblazer overseas right after I purchased it. Right at 37K the computer went out, had it towed 3 hours away to the only dealer in Italy I could find that would work on it, replaced the Fan Clutch, PCM, and a slew of sensors, over 2k in repairs. Contacted GM was told out of warranty and overseas so they couldn’t help me, thanks GM! The nice service rep at GM did tell me there where a slew of recalls and TSB that needed to be performed and that once I was back in the USA to take it in and have them done, even opened a case and gave me a case number. Too bad I’m serving overseas and can’t get the TB to the USA for service……

Fast forward to present, now in Germany, 76K and the Fan Clutch is out again. I’m going to order a new water pump and fan clutch, have it repaired and sell it. It’s a shame as we love the size and comfort of the TB, bit we can’t afford to be stranded again by it. We also had other problems with it, relays going out, the high mounted 3rd brake light going out, the rear tail light circuit board rusted and fused together etc etc ….

I have been a die hard GM owner, this was my 4th new GM product, sadly it will be my last. Time to give other manufactures vehicles a try. Bye bye GM!

Add yet another TB to the list, was getting on I-95 when it happened! pretty scary, hit the gas to merge in and thought I blew the transmission! the guy behind me wasn't too happy either. He let me know with some unfriendly gestures. I got back off the highway and checked the tranny fluid only to find that it was fine, but noticed the fan pushing a lot of air. Luckily my brother works for a GM dealer, I called him to get A price and how long to get one. He said they stocked them cause they go all the time! his price $170 plus tax and a warning not to damage the water pump when trying to unscrew the clutch assembly. Only 59K on the truck and no other major problems. keep hoping for that recall!!!

Add me to the list, I bought my 02 LTZ used with 84k miles. I love the truck and so does my wife. We have had a few issues with errant codes, but a few days ago the fan locked in and started making that notorious jet sound and the service code. I'm a mechanic by trade and just figured I would be out the 40 to 60 bucks for a new fan clutch until I found out it was electronic.

I found a new one at checker auto parts for 165.99 and they had to order the part. The part took a day to come in but compared to the cost of the $380 unit the dealer wanted well worth the wait.

I did it myself the only 2 problems I had was getting the nut off of the water pump shaft. I used an air hammer to loosen, the other was the clearance to the top neck of the radiator that took a little bit of a pry to clear. Other than that I had it completed in about an hour using air tools. I filled the system with new coolant and started up the engine, cleared the code and the fan is operating as it should.

OMG...I can't believe I didn't read this before I bought my new 2002 GMC Envoy SLT. It's such a NICE car, but I've only had it for less than 3 months and the fan decided to stay on forever!!! I knew I should of stuck to a Japanese car. My dad has a 91 Toyota 4runner that he had for 10 years and it sounds better than mine. The dealership don't even know what the problem was... they told me it was the fan clutch harness for like about $40 for the part and $400 to install. I bought the part myself and had my uncle (who was a mechanic) replace it for $60 and the car still sound the same. My uncle told me it was the fan clutch. So in other words, the dealership charged me $80 for a false diagnostic. I called them back about a day later, they told me "maybe" it is the fan clutch and told me to go back for another checkup "which" I would have to pay again. So in other words IMPORTS RULE!!! Don't trust GM Motors. Honda, Toyota, Nissan and any other "Japanese" cars are more reliable. I'm going back to imports. my first and LAST DOMESTIC!!! Never, I mean NEVER listen to your wife when she tells you she wants a Envoy. Tell her NO!!!! WE are getting a NISSAN!!!! thank you

Anyone wanting to fix the fan themselves can use a ford truck clutch fan tool (36 MM) that can be purchased at auto-pro for under $20, it comes with 2 wrenches 1 for the fan and the other to hold the water pump (loosen 13MM screws on pump, slide tool under washers and snug back up) crack it loose and drain about 1/2 gallon out of radiator and remove 2 10MM bolts holding fan shroud. slide in a piece of cardboard to protect radiator and remove 4 13MM bolts holding the fan blade (pop off with flat head screw driver if you can't get it off) push transmission lines off their brackets and pop out pin that holds wire harness to fan clutch on driver side. Carefully lift fan shroud on passenger side and get it passed the radiator hose connector. Once you have done that you can push the shroud back far enough to get the clutch mechanism out between the radiator and the shroud (this is when the cardboard will save you!) don't forget the wires going to the clutch, they will slide Back off the shroud if the pin is removed. Total cost about $220 (fan clutch and tool) and took about an hour and 2 Heinekens for me. Take your time and Good Luck Ken...

While TB was under ext war we told them twice there was a prob with the fan clutch, they just said that was normal. I will buy after market and dump this thing. While at dealership today a woman came in asking to have diagnostic run on her 2006 Cadillac Sports Car, you know the $85000 one. She was involved in an accident because her brakes failed. She had the accident damage repaired at a shop her ins co recommended. The dealer refused saying the car was no longer under warranty because it had been in an accident. She said she wanted to talk to Cadillac so thy gave her the number, she then ask to us their phone, they refused to let her use the phone, she was in teers by then, they then told her to take it some place else, un-F-ing believeable. My wife's father is a retired GM dealer and he even said GM does not care about the customers anymore.

Same problem. 02 Trailblazer fan clutch want out about a year ago. The cheapest price to fix it is about 500.00. Also, the rear windshield wiper leaks washer fluid. Any suggestions.

6/18/07 Add another one to the list. 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer with only 53,000 miles jet engine! Needs to have fan clutch replaced. I am very disappointed that no one has pursued this issue. Definitely should be a recall. Any one have information on lawsuit or one started I AM IN!

Welllll, here is yet ANOTHER Fan Clutch Assembly problem! We purchased a used 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada last summer, actually it was the ONLY car the dealership offered us to purchase! :( Love the car, but it has started to "not start" a couple of months ago, then yesterday, was the fan problem. OMG....this is ridiculous! I have been complaining to my husband about this for a couple of months now. It's been doing it intermittently, now it's constant! Funny, I, too, own a Lear Jet! :( And as everyone else has written, it's only a mere $671.50 to fix this problem! How many Fan Clutch Assembly's need to go bad to have GM make this a recall problem! Unbelievable! Wish I didn't like this car so much. But do agree with other's, the next and probably rest of our cars, will be foreign and NOT domestic!

Fan Clutch failed, had dealer update PCM module $75.00. Then ordered new fan clutch on-line from Ebay $149 including shipping. Did not have clutch tool, but was able to make one from a piece of scrap steel and 2 1/4 bolts. Total Repair cost $225. But I am somewhat experienced and was able to fab my own tool. Not a hard job, total time to complete 90 minutes. Updating PCM not absolutely necessary so could have done for $149. Poor design of the fan unit I believe is the cause of failures GM choose to use this unit so should be responsible, but...

Greetings all GM owners. This was my first GM purchase of a 03 TB LT 53K. I Love this truck, but tonight I hear this fan noise for the first time. I had it at the dealer once and questioned the ticking sound when it was still under warranty, but the dealer stated this was normal. The fan is now engaged hot or cold and the jet engine sound that is mentioned on this site is also my problem. I will contact my dealer tomorrow and find out where GM stands on this failure. I hope I am not disappointed like the many others who have voiced their comments on this site. GM should step up and take ownership if they want to stay in the automotive business.

Add one more jet to the list. Just found out that my clutch went bad also. Will try to figure cheapest way to fix, but I am very disaponted at this time.
