1998 Chevrolet Malibu LX from North America

Summary:

As bad as any car I have ever heard of, seriously

Faults:

SO many things have gone wrong. It all started with the rotors, 3 times.

Alternator went bad at 65,000 miles.

Driver seat got stuck at an angle for over a month, then one day while driving it just popped back into place. Very strange.

Car dash lights put me in the Christmas spirit every couple months! First the check enging, then oil, but when the ABS Light comes on, BEWARE! It shuts off.

Sensors have gone out.

Other things that I can't remember their names.

General Comments:

When the car is free of problems, it runs great. Good power and quick. Comfortable drive.

After I purchased this car, within the first month, nothing, but problems. Everything that the original owner had put NEW into the car, I also had to replace them within 2 months.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.1 V6 from North America

Summary:

Junk

Faults:

I with the previous 120 entries. This is what is wrong with American cars today. I to would love to show American pride and buy American, but with products like the Chevrolet Malibu why would you. My 98 bu has only 35K miles, drove to work and back not much more, the blower switch is out...again, passenger window works some of the time, engine quits while driving, engine knocks, brakes have gone bad about every year. ABS light comes on about once a month, just to name a few of the frequent problems. All hale Japan.

General Comments:

I really don't have anything good to say here.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu from North America

Summary:

Do not buy, no matter how sweet of a deal it seems like your getting

Faults:

It didn't take long for the problems to set in once I bought this barely broken in car.

Bad front left wheel bearing 31,000 miles $240.

Battery terminal corroded and snapped off 34,000 miles $75.

Bad front left wheel bearing (again) 36,000 miles $240.

Bad front right wheel bearing 39,000 $240.

Car began gushing coolant at 42,000 miles. Intake manifold gasket needed to be replaced $700+

Fan controls never worked on settings 1 and 2.

Brake lights stopped working completely, faulty wiring $150.

Bad front Wheel Bearing (again) 43,000 $240.

A/C compressor began making loud metallic rattling noise.

At 47000 miles engine light came on, I had random multiple misfires, went away and then came back, car still misfires and is not drivable.

Car needs valve job $1500+, drive axle, A/C compressor, resistor for fan, new pads and rotors.

General Comments:

I have only owned this car for two years, only driving it for one of them. The last year it has been in my driveway until recently I found out repairs would cost well in excess of it's dismal resale value, so this car with only 48k on it is going straight to the scrapyard.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.1 from North America

Summary:

Very nice value

Faults:

I have a hole worn in the seat back, which is a common problem with this car. It was repairable under a recall (during warranty), but I didn't find this out until after the warranty expired.

I also had two fuel injectors clog.

Other than that I have had no major problems, just usual maintenance items (tires and brakes)

General Comments:

I gave the car higher marks for handling, but this in comparison to other 4 door sedans. Handling also depends on what tires you put on the car. Softer riding tires will not corner as well. Harder tires will corner well, but ride stiffer. I have driven this car over 100,000 miles and plan on using it for at least another 30,000 to 50,000. If you maintain cars, they will be there for you.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.1 V6 from North America

Summary:

I would likely buy another, good quality and value

Faults:

Very few issues with this car, Brakes are weak however and stoping is slow at best. Frequently had to replace rotors and pads.

The alternator went once or twice on me.

General Comments:

Overall this is a very good low maintenance.

I'm pleased with most everything on this car, good handling, speed leave somehting to be desired, but is not bad.
