Summary:

Reliable when given proper maintenance attention

Faults:

I had the familiar coolant leak starting back in 2005. Flushed system to try to find leak and never could. Replaced water pump also, but it still leaked. Ended up using head gasket repair and leak stopped. Still cools fine.

Had a strange noise when shifting at high RPMs in late '05. Changing the fuel filter remedied that???

I also have the steering slip at between 25 and 40 mph ocassionally. I have been told there is a sensor switch that may be causing that.

Had to change front upper ball joints at around 84000 miles due to grinding sound when braking.

Starter went at about 87000.

Wheel cylinders needed replacing (leaking) and brakes adjusted at same time due to uneven braking action.

Found rear a/c line leak at around 92000 miles. Ended up with bill at $1000 because line was ceased up on rear evaporator. Had to replace line, evaporator and dryer.

Front door lock actuators seem to not work well when outside temp is above 80 degrees. Hit and miss depending on whether door is in direct sunlight or not.

Drivers side interior door handle broke.

Driver's side rear window motor quit working, but returned to normal after a few slugs with a hammer.

General Comments:

Tahoe has been quite reliable on the many long trips I have taken it on. I love this vehicle, even with the major repairs I have had to endure.

Since reaching 90000 miles, repairs have been a little more costly than I'd like.

Summary:

Great

Faults:

80,000 intake gaskets replaced.

92,000 front brake rotors and brake pads replaced.

96,000 starter and water pump replaced.

110,000 fuel pump replaced.

General Comments:

Did all of the work myself, and with the regular maintenance that needs to be done on it, the Tahoe is a great vehicle. After 2 winters here in PA there is little rust underneath. Handles like a dream and the 4WD works great. Definitely a great trick IF you put the time and effort into the regular maintenance that any vehicle needs.

Summary:

I will not touch any of the general motors car again, I regretted evey time I bought one.

Faults:

Intake manifold was leaking.

Heater hose connection leaking and broke trying to take it out.

General Comments:

Intake manifold was leaking the day I got it. replaced it, started leaking again.

Heater hose connection was leaking, tried to replace it it broke. This engineering at it's worse, very little cross section on the body of tread.

I like the roominess and seats and look, but this is a poorly engineered product.

Keep in mind that this is a used car and that you have no idea how it was taken care before you bought it. I am not a GM guy, but know several people who got well over 200,000 miles of these trucks without much trouble, I think being that you had a toyota you just wanted to hate a domestic truck.

I think that the review is accurate, and the headline sums up how a rapidly increasing number of people feel about GM's poor products.

1999 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 350 from North America

Year of manufacture1999

Most recent year of ownership2007
Engine and transmission 350 Automatic
Distance when acquired20000 miles
Most recent distance89000 miles

Faults:

At 30k miles the alternator went out. We were on vacation and they refused to fix it without leaving it for 2 days, so I fixed it in the parking lot. At 56,000 the transmission went out.

Had to have it rebuilt at $1,700. At 65,000 miles the rear end went out. Something broke and jammed up the gears; cost was $1600. Also replaced:

2 new belts, idler pulley, 3 batteries, all new shocks at 60,000, new brakes including discs and drums, water pump, intake manifold gaskets (leaking coolant), power steering hoses, plus numerous other little things.

General Comments:

My Honda and Mazda have not had any problems before 150,000 miles, this has been the worst car I have ever owned.
